STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter Special Edition

Probably the best combat space sim ever made due to combination of visuals, sound, music, gameplay and general design. Lots of small details and general respect for source material makes this geme a jewel among both SW games and Space Sims. Campain and it's dificuly evolves in such way that you do actualy feel like you start as a fresh pilot from academy and end as an elite space ace and saviour of the Emperor and Lord Vader. And this not due to fancy QTEs and Scrips as they do it modern games. Actual player skill is requried and rewarded properly

The first game in my life that inspired me "liberty" ! Thanks to GOG, once again, I feel so happy to complete a stressing mission and being rewarded by the emperor :-D

I actually own the physical copies of 1994 and 1998 editions. To this day, Tie Fighter is still my #1 top PC games ever. Make no mistake, you will not regret buying $10 of this game. All you need is a joystick and you're good to go. Well, off to play it again! :)

For those who just want a short summary before deciding to buy Tie-Fighter: BUY IT! This game is worth every penny. It is an excellent space simulator/dogfighter drenched in Star Wars lore and filled with memorable events and challenging missions. I can not stress enough THIS GAME IS GREAT! For the rest of you: This game was one of the first "real" videogames I remember playing and enjoying. Oh I had played a few other games before but Tie-Fighter really captured my imagination. The fact that I got to play as an Imperial pilot was an interesting change of pace, and this game does a great job of showing off how the empire is actually doing some good law'n'order type stuff and not everyone fighting for them are mustache twirling villains. The first several missions are about fighting pirates and bringing peace to a system torn by civil war! The gameplay is phenomenal. While the graphics are certainly a bit dated, they certainly aren't as bad a they could be. Turns out spaceships benefit from early 3d's blocky polygons. The missions range from dogfights, to raids on space platforms, to all-out space battles with capital ships weighing in. The whole experience is action packed and filled with challenges and split second decisions. The missions are also DRENCHED in Star Wars lore. Lots of little tidbits and extra bits of fluff if you complete the secondary and secret objectives. The game IS fairly hard. While there is an option to turn on infinite munitions and invulnerability, the base game can be a bit unforgiving. There's nothing like getting through an hour long dogfight only to have your ship stray a little to close to that enemy frigate and be blasted to smithereens and have to start the level over. However, I never really felt like the challenges were beyond my abilities to overcome. To sum up, A great game and a great experience. Glad to finally see it here on GOG !10/10

Easily one of my favourite games of all time. I spend hours playing this game back in the 90s. The missions are hard. There's not a lot of spoon feeding. You are piloting a flying eggshell and you feel it. That being said, it never feels unfair. There is an inflight recorder to "tape" your missions to see where you went wrong. The combat, the flight mechanics, the ships, the story...they all feel RIGHT. As for the extras, please don't ignore these. The Steele Chronicles is a novella based on your character. Gives great background insight on to what's going on. Also, the strategy guide acts as a continuation of the story. I remember having a VERY hard time not reading ahead because I didn't want the missions spoiled, but the story was SO GOOD. Thank you GOG for getting this gem on your site. It was an insta-buy (literally. I pulled over my car at 7AM on the drive to work to buy it the second it was available).
