Still holds up!

I've played STAR WARS™ Republic Commando for the very first time a couple of days ago. And too make it short: This game holds up really well and i highly recommend it to every Star Wars Fan. You play as the leader of special ops clone trooper squad. You work your way through (mostly) linear levels. You lead your team, direct your squad and complete objectives in various missions. The game is about 15 years old by now. So there is not much to add in terms of graphics. But when it comes to gameplay it plays really well and smooth. Especially considering the age of the game. It is also pretty dang difficult (for me personally at least) if i might add. I had a few frustrating moments but that also might have been just me being bad at the game. Who knows? One last side note I want to add: I had some technical issues with the game. Meaning: I had a few crashes throughout my almost 10 hours. So you should keep that in mind and save the game frequently. Other than that i didnt have really much to complain. It took me about 10 hours to finish it. It was really fun and i can highly recommend it. Delta out!

STAR WARS: Republic Commando is an utterly linear first-person squad shooter that plays out via mostly very brief, mildly Star-Wars-flavored encounters contained in short corridors or small arena-like environments. These scenes are sold as story paragraphs which due to their shortness do not accomplish an immersive storytelling arc. Tactical assignments lets you have your team members breach doors, man turrets, utilize sniping spots or grenade throwing battlements. While this system works, it doesn't provide much fun - it rather feels like it only adds more damage dealt to any given combat situation. Your mates A.I. is just sometimes adequate. Only if standing near a healing station outside of battle, they will patch themselves up independently. While engaged, you have to tell them to heal up though. There are fun one-liners here and there that often provide accurate comments on the current situation. Enemy variety is low, although adversaries can move and behave quite intelligently at times (picking up grenades thrown at them and returning these). There is not a huge arsenal at your disposal either, and you don't feel real impact feedback with any of the weapons. Coupled with the bullet-spongey enemies this does not make for exciting combat. It's worse when you are required to climb into some turret and just hold the fire button until the target (e.g. some space craft) is deemed destroyed, without any sense of urgency present or real targeting skill required. Visuals are fine for the release date, the soundtrack is OK too, but ultimately forgettable. Overall, this title is a rather bland affair.

Live and breath Star Wars

So, there's not much to add which hasn't already been said, but this game is extremely immersive. Fully recommended to anyone who likes Star Wars and/or FPS, as the game shines in it's gameplay aspects as well. Only thing I had an issue with were a few graphical bugs, which could be attributed to it's age and the aiming feeling a bit off, at least on my PC. Other than that, you really feel for your squadmates, who all were animated like a real elite commando squad, while keeping their different characteristics through the intense and well made voice acting. Only Thing I still wish they would have added is an actual co-op campaign. The game feels like it's perfectly made for that, but it's just not included, which is truly a humongously missed chance. If there ever will be a Remaster or Remake, I hope they include this. The rest they should keep as is.

An honest opinion

I didn't play the game back in 2005, so this is going to be a review coming from a completely fresh and honest experience: Star Wars Republic Commando is fine - sometimes a good fun, but if you're not a blinded Clone Wars fanboy, it's often an average, but overall absolutely servicable game. Need to mention though, the voice acting (and also the sound design) is phenomenal, the personality of your team mates give a good amount of charm to the game. Anything besides that... well. First of all I couldn't make the game run in widescreen, no matter which instructions I tried to follow. Also, I'm sure this looked really great back in 2005, but I rather find most of it a bit bland today. And the fact that maps have a lot of copy-pasted elements didn't help at all - not to mention levels are almost completely linear. Combat is also a bit of hit and miss (sometimes), some enemies are irritatingly bullet sponges, and also your team mates can be quite dumb sometimes. Still, I think the overall squad leader experience was implemented pretty well - just don't forcelf yourself to play the game on Hard mode, no matter what. Remember, the game is supposed to be fun, and difficulty was designed here in a lazy way sadly. By the way, Republic Commando likes to overwhelm you with hordes of enemies - which I gotta admit though, at least feel pretty authentic. Last thoughts: if you like Star Wars at least a bit and/or arcade first person shooters with squads, get the game whenever it's on sale. For a few bucks, the game can give you some good fun - even with its obvious shortcomings. Don't believe the fanboy reviews, it's far from that good, but still, it's a decent game.

ooh is it good!

I played this the first time in 2024. It took some time to set up the right keybindings but when I did the game starts incredible and never stops being incredible. It's a pretty short game and for me that's a good thing. Constant action, shooting and commanding your deltas. If you like star wars this game is essential to try. The world in this game is detailed and very much star wars.
