Works fine and gives you the ST feel

I'm a giant nerd so the sheer amount of Star Trek in this game is very welcome! You aren't just controlling the ship at the helm, you're deferring to your crew who each have a role in running the ship. Want to warp to a location? You can select a drop down menu or push a hotkey, but you can also tap your officer on the shoulder and ask them to lay in a course, half impulse. Every officer can be asked to report on their status which is a fine way to remember your mission objectives. Combat is similar. Contact your science officer to adjust scanners, you second in command to go to red alert, your munitions officer to target the enemy and redirect the shields to counter incoming fire. This is a pretty linear experience, but because of the tight structure there's voice acting for everything and a lot of incidental touches to the animation. Drop by a space station to refuel and repair. Fly to a planet to deal with a distress call. There's a variety of objectives and it really does get across the old school Trek feel of professionals calmly dealing with more and more dangerous situations. This is not a very fast paced game but it's no slouch for action. There's some timed objectives, dogfights, and even given the dated character graphics the space action is colorful and accurate to the show. If you want to go on a little ride in the Next Generation universe this is a fine choice. Thankfully you can at will make a lot of decisions and work out some things for yourself. Also you're not just shooting the crap out of aliens because that's not what StarFleet is supposed to do!

A fantastic, buggy Trek game

This is one of those games that was released before it was truly ready. There are bugs, memory leaks and other problems. It is also a very, very unique game, letting you command a massive ship, which feels massive to control. The Star Trek setting is just a juicy cherry on top. I would recommend this game with one big disclaimer. You may, or may not run into issues trying to run this. Getting this to run in Widescreen Resolutions can potentially be a chore. Modding Multiplayer and Single Player are also quite different, while carrying risks of their own. The game will crash, that is almost a guarantee if you attempt to play through it. So save often and be prepared to close and restart the game every few hours. Please do not knock on GOG with these issues. They sometimes can and do fix game compatibility issues, however this particular gem of a game also happens to be a broken gem of a game, and I strongly doubt there's anything GOG can do that the community hasn't already tried in the last 15+ years.

Could have been a 5 star

I like Star Trek, watched the original series, TNG, Star Trek Enterprise, Voyager an DS9. Watched all the movies, even the new ones. I played some Star Trek games and loved DS9 Dominion Wars. Controlling one ore more ships, kicking the ass of the Cardassians and having a blast. So my interest in Bridge Commander was pretty high. Sadly the game never appeared on the shelf's off the surrounding shops, because it was limited in production numbers (like someone in the comments said). Finally around 17 years later I am able to play it thanks to GoG. The main menu is designed in the style of Elite Force 1, but a bit to overloaded. If you pause the game through Esc-button, no "resume button" is showed, what causes a bit of confusion. Start in the game is good, you get a sequence and a tutorial. Here the game loses 1 star, because the UI is half-good/bad. Starting with the view from the captains seat you can look around the bridge and control the ship through interaction with the bridge crew. Controls for energy, repair, sensors, combats and "captain assistant" are self-explanatory. But navigation is a mess. Setting a course to warp is not bad, but using warp in the system to get from planet to planet? This is something, according to DS9 season 4 or 5, that is seen as very dangerous. Getting to a station is a bit tricky too, sometimes I had to use "intercept" to move the ship with decent speed. A problem later is, that sensor operator and captain assistant sit nearly in one line, I don't want to know how many times I used the wrong one. But you get used to it, especially after getting a feeling for the "direct control", with which you control the ship through WASD and mouse. Now the game starts and it starts okay. Getting used to the controls, learn how to interpret the UI, get a feeling for the enemy ships, etc. The game had a wonderful flow. Except at the end. The last 2-3 missions were way too hard, even with the special torpedos, finalizing to 3 star score.

Best open Star Trek combat since 2002

Bridge Commander is not just a campaign game, its a platform and a sandbox. The modding of the core game is extensive. The base game gives you an interesting Star Trek type mission to solve and its quite tricky at times as the mission scripting is really sensitive. There is no joysticj support but you can use joytokey or voice attack. The character models show their age but the game engine is solid. The mods have much better ships and even alternative bridges so you can fly around in a klingon BOP. There is a downside to all the modding in that you can totally change the ships and weapons effectiveness. There is a mod call Bridge Commander Remastered it looks good, but they have changed the stock ships so that in the normal quick battle a ship that should easily win is destroyed easily by a weaker oponent. This makes the remastered game really un-balanced. You can spend a whole bunch of time finding ships and bridges and star systems to write your own scenarios and its all scripted in python. Totally worth getting and there isn't really anything good since which is a total own goal. Multiplayer on LAN still works. Max resolution 1920x1080. Now we just need Klingon academy on GOG.

Star Trek Bridge Commander

Nostalgia but also a fun game. The custom mission maker is great for setting up quick battles. Check "nexus mods" for mods for this great game. Under $10.00 is todays GOG price and it is worth it.
