Use espionage and stealth combat tactics, including sniper rifle assaults.
Somebody looked at Star Trek and thought "this could work as a squad based tactics game." They were right.
Another one with a great plot and voice talent, the game is easy to mod (a hallmark of the old Activision Trek games) and it was challenging enough, while still being quite forgiving.
As a bonus, all the Activision era Star Trek games shared the same continuity, and it wasn't uncommon to have characters from, say Armada II referring to events from Away Team, or Elite Force II talking about the events of Bridge Commander.
Its a fun as heck game.
I have the CDROM of this game and I have tried for years to get this to work but I hardly had any success. Now that GoG is actually putting games on here that I want to get from the good old games age, I pounced and I have zero issues. I could never get the audio to work in cutscenes or mission briefs and I would have issues with the windows task bar intruding in the game and kicking me out, it was so frustrating. All that is gone and well worth a look if you've never played it.
When I was a tyke I saw this game advertised in a magazine and it looked amazing. I couldn't afford the game let alone the computer to run it so until now it's just been a dream to play.
I am VERY PLEASED that I wasn't the least bit disappointed. It looks great, sounds great (music and effects are crisp and familiar), and more so over plays smooth and consistently!
It's basically Commandos with Star Trek characters which at first seems a bit odd, but this isn't just JJ Abrams 'kill em all' Star Trek Wars thankfully so you tend to be able to choose whether to employ non-lethal or lethal options...although sometimes in war the choice is made for you.
You've got your squad, they've got their skills, and thankfully you CAN pause the entire game and issue commands when things get hectic even though the game is generally in real time.
This is a game for fans clearly made by fans in the best of ways. Original voice actors are in abundance, technology is on point, and there's little touches like Borgs behaving in a borg-like manner and the interface itself looking like classic Trek.
This game is challenging but appropriately. You will not get screwed by RNG or bad controls, just by a lack of forethought or underestimating the enemy. It will make the kid in you smile if you're anything like me.
If you imagine a game like Commandos - real-time missions in defined locations with a small squad of characters, each with their own roles and aptitudes - except you're "beaming down" to various Star Trek locations then that's essentially what this game is.
It's one of those occasions where the game's genre is a solid and natural fit for the source material, and the license palpably improves the experience: "beaming down" allows for a wider variety of locations than you usually see in games of this type, and familiarity with Star Trek means you probably already have a basic understanding of what the various alien races are capable of, what the various squad roles are, what the equipment can do, etc. Phasers can be set to stun, kill, etc. See, you already knew that :)
It was never the flashiest or most high-profile Star Trek game, but if you like the idea of it then you'll find it a solid and enjoyable experience.
I never got the chance to play Away Team when I was a kid, so I was excited to give it a shot in 2021. And... it's certainly an interesting game, I'll grant, but suffers a bit from an incredibly clunky UI (even by contemporary standards) and a bizarre premise contrary to the primary themes of (golden era) Star Trek.
Away Team is a real-time tactical strategy game, and the core systems have a lot of potential to be engaging, and a fair amount of theoretical depth. Bonus objectives also provide some nice replay value, and optimizing your runs can be rewarding. The main issue holding the game back is the UI, which is profoundly clumsy (for example, you can only use the left mouse button to issue move commands, can only use the right mouse button for interaction commands) and largely bereft of visual feedback. The cursor, for example, rarely changes, meaning critical information is often obfuscated. This makes even simple tasks unnecessarily frustrating and tedious.
The other, lesser, issue is the premise, which has you lead the away team of a Federation starship that seems to have been built specifically to invade sovereign nations and interfere in their conflicts. It's literally nothing but one flagrant, unnecessary prime directive violation after another. Obviously any Star Trek game oriented around violence is going to have this issue, but most of the other Star Trek games at least try to justify it, yeah? And Away Team fails to make even that token effort.
All of which isn't to say that Away Team is a bad game... just that it probably doesn't have any appeal to non-Star Trek fans, and even for Trekkies it's probably best to go into it with low expectations.
