Star Control I & II

In the past few months, I've been playing the free version for Star Control 2. It is Ur-Quan Masters HD, downloaded from Sourceforge. Until this SAVE GAME BUG bit me, I would have agreed with the other reviewers that UQMHD is the version of SC2 that one should play. A nice feature in UQMHD allows you to turn off the universal timer so you can explore to your heart's content without worrying about having the game end on you after playing the game for many hours. Sadly, the SAVE GAME BUG in UQMHD gives me an empty save slot when I attempt to save. After over 100 saves and perhaps about halfway through the game, my save attempts started to kick me out of the game. I could still reload the game. But, finally, I ran into a save attempt that failed completely (likely due to save info overloading a static save file size). This SAVE GAME BUG prompted me to give UQMHD a 1-star rating at Sourceforge. It is the only bug I ran into during my many hours of play. Otherwise, I would have rated it 5-stars. It's not GOGs fault, so I rated SC2 with 5 stars here on GOG based on my UQMHD experience up to the point of the SAVE GAME BUG. I haven't played SC2 beyond a couple of hours so can't comment on the possibility this SAVE GAME BUG exists in SC2 as it does in UQMHD v0.7.0. I have not played SC1 but have listened to the soundtrack GOG has provided for SC1 and 2--very nice.

The main issue i have with this game is it is impossible to win the game the first time playing without using a walk throu. The reason for this is the time limit. You only have a short window in which to complete the game and the time limit is to short if you just go about and explore the map by feeling around. The in game hints are weak so without using a walk throu telling you what to do and when you will inevitably will lose. i started to use a walk throu after about a third of the way through and I still lost. Other than that it has a lot of great humor and challenges. The Time limit should have been a difficulty variable so those that wanted to just go around the map and explore for themselves could still win.

Finally this game has been released! I must have spent many many months of late nighs trying to finish this game - it had me gripped! IT WAS AWESOME! Going to buy it ASAP!

The game is great......if it plays. Hope you don't mind losing $6. Most likely you won't be able to play on a newer computer which is what I have
