Best GTA-like ever

While the core fundamentals are similar to the GTA series, Sleeping Dogs has 2 key changes: First, you're an infiltrated cop. You're not a gangster (even though you'll act like one) and to me, that was a much better fit. Second, weapon-less fighting is great. In GTA, brawls suck and you just mash one button. Here, there's combos, dodge, block, it feels like real fights, you can even use some props to knockout bad guys. The atmosphere is really well done and you'll feel like you're in a HK movie like Infernal Affairs, Election, etc. Overall, a really fun game with good story and much better than any GTA.

7th Generation Gem

This game is one of my favourite new IPs from its generation. To explain it in short, it's a GTA clone set in Hong Kong with an emphasis on Batman-esque hand to hand fighting and limited gunplay. The story is a short and sweet 15 hour campaign revolving around Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-American repat undercover with the HKPD tasked to infiltrate and take down the triad. While a simple setup there's well written characters (with some surprisingly big name voice actors) and a "greyness" to Wei's character as his loyalty to the police, the triads and his own personal motivations all come into play throughout the story. The combat is fun and satisfying with unlockable moves gained from statues hidden around the map and character upgrades tied to Triad and Police XP gained through missions depending on how much illegal stuff you do over the mission vs how "by the books" you were. It is rather easy though and doesn't have the depth of a Yakuza title for example. You can also impale guys on swordfish. Side content of favours, racing and rooster fights are pretty fun and a nice way to explore United Front's version of Hong Kong (which has an unmatched atmosphere when rainy and paired with the absolutely killer radio soundtrack). The dating side missions are hilarious because you will meet a girl, go out once and she will then disappear from your phone and the game, very obviously something that had to be cut during development. Included are also the two DLC expansions. These weren't amazingly well received when this game was new but as a pack in they're both fun 1-2 hour romps each. One is an MJ Thriller homage with hopping ghosts and the other is Wei back on beat cop duty beating down a cult. All in all, this is my favourite "AA" game which is sadly a category you don't see too much these days.

Time play it on PC, pok gai!

After playing it on PS4, this was one of those games that stuck to me, as it has that wit and charm to bring you into its world, and a title screen song that is just that catchy. From the crazy driving, to engaging environmental combat, crowded and interactive Hong Markets, emotional Karaoke moments, and surprisingly interesting chinese triad storyline, this was of the games that definitely deserved a spot on GOG to be preserved forever. To the GOG team, thank you! And to anyone who hasn't played the game yet, remember this: - A man who never plays Sleeping Dogs is never a whooole man.

A Chinese cop movie as a game.

This game looks and feels as an over the top Chinese cop movie set in an open world, aided by some well done voice acting and a well made gameplay system. Sleeping Dogs does something which a lot of open world games fail to do. It delivers a tightly controlled storyline mixed with a lot of freedom. The player doesn't need to feel lost, unfocused nor confused as the entire system can keep you entertained and on track. The goal or cause of playing is just a GPS route away to the next point of interest. Those points of interest will lead the player trough an ever more violent path where lines begin to blur between the cops and the triads. That mentioned violence gets heavier and heavier and in doing so it completely rejects any glorification of the triads nor any gangster in general. It's an interesting factor notice while playing it all, though it also ends up in a rather silly over the top version of the old movie trope: it's just a flesh wound. This is a top notch game with only one true drawback: The controls, even when customized, can occasionally become a pain when playing with a mouse and keyboard. The game has moments where it conflicts with any built up muscle memory which could shortly ruin an otherwise perfect fight. A great game overall.
