Silent Hill 4: The Room

Silent Hill 4 has alwayts been my personal favorite for it's concept, soundtrack and it's gut-wrenching atmopshere, and to see it finally being put onto GOG brings me so much joy. I really hope Konami plans on porting Silent Hill 2 and 3 to GOG. They did a pretty stellar job porting this, with it being upscaled to 4K resolution. If you haven't gotten around to playing The Room, now is the best time to pick it up. It is currently the best way to play the game.

At release it divided fans, but today it feels like a game ahead of its time. Combining both first- and third-person perspectives, an unusual structure, and a stronger focus on character psychology, it stands out as a unique survival horror experience. Instead of relying on pitch-black environments and a flashlight, the horror in Silent Hill 4 comes from suffocating atmosphere. Henry’s apartment, which first appears as a safe haven, gradually becomes a terrifying prison, with mysterious portals serving as his only escape. Each world Henry visits is grotesque, filthy, and unsettling, yet fascinatingly atmospheric. The story introduces several memorable characters – from Henry’s sympathetic neighbor Eileen Galvin to the chilling antagonist Walter Sullivan. The varied environments, such as the subway, forest, and hospital, keep the experience fresh while deepening the mystery. The monster design is among the very best in the series: rotting dogs, grotesquely mutated patients, eerie two-headed childlike creatures, and the unforgettable ghosts that cannot be killed. Combat isn’t flawless, but it offers a wide arsenal – from the classic steel pipe to the revolver, axe, pickaxe, shovel, or even a golf club. The atmosphere is further elevated by Akira Yamaoka’s unforgettable soundtrack, which perfectly balances melancholy and dread. Silent Hill 4: The Room demands patience and openness. It may not be perfect, but its originality and psychological depth have earned it cult status. Perhaps the most divisive entry in the series, yet time has shown that Silent Hill 4 holds a firm place in horror history.

This game is absolutely amazing. It's one of my most favourites. I'd love to buy 2 and 3 for PC as well if they become available.

FPS throughout the game is set at 30fps, including cutscenes, which the 2004 PC port had locked at 15fps. So, is an improvement. Post-processing is back, the noise was missing in the 2004 PC port, for example. But some of them are locked at a poor resolution like Bloom, so it looks blocky in some situations. 4K and 16:9 native support, the control support on both versions remains the same (only DirectInput supported, to support for true Analog). Also, it has missing content like the 2004 PC port. Of all possible hauntings, 6 of them are missing.

This is a really smooth port with a lot of great options for the higher end hardware of today! Really thankful that Konami is finally doing this, and I really hope they do the same with all of the classic titles!
