i had the disc version...

...of this game back in the day, i remember it had a huge, gamebreaking bug in one of the later levels, one that forced you to use a cheat code to progress. wonder if the GOG team fixed that? anyway, if you like mech games, this one is a classic, nice design, no-nonsense action and a ton of missions. only thing you might complain about is the lack of diversity in the environments. but the 3d cockpit with customizable screens was awesome.

Arcade Action Mech Game

This isn't Mechwarrior, it's more of arcade-action-ish than Mechwarrior. I remember playing it on the Dos era, and having a great blast with it. Actions are fast, and also explosions are very satisfying. And this is like decades ago. If you don't mind dosbox, I recommend this game. I would love to have this but I hated dosbox games.

horrible: by bioware fan

I try to judge games based on now and back in its day. I say this game is absolutely horrible. Boring in every way possible. Nothing like mech warrior. The game play is clunky, the graphics are bad for even its time. There is no fun value at all. I am a big bioware fan since kotor. I been playing its classics like Never winter nights. I love anything bioware but this game. I at least bought this game to get a history lesson of how bioware evolved. That is the only value this game served me.

Still worth a shot

Shattered Steel is a real old horse in the mech simulation genre. More similar to the Earthsiege style of combat than the Mechwarrior series, it employs the good old voxel engine for the landscape and rather good 3D models for the game mechanics. The pre-configured dosbox emulation runs surprisingly smooth on Win XP, with occasional screen resolution problems. The story evolves around a biomechanical alien invasion on a mining world, where the protagonist is a mercenary on defense mission. The storyline is good with a few surprising twists, interesting mission design, and customizable vehicles. The sound and music are high quality and immersive. Good voice-acting during briefing and missions. The game is a good buy for all of you waiting for a Mech action game.

Was a fun game to test

I remember testing this game at Interplay and thought it was pretty cool. It's not quite mech Warrior which is neither a bad thing nor a good thing. it's it's own thing. Hard to believe that Bioware went on to become a huge developer and then started making over budgeted mediocre games. They say not to blame EA so o.k. then, Ray and Greg, stop ruining your own games.
