Shadowrun at it best ... for now
Great Game, misses some features that are standard nowadays like swapiing items between companions the easy way but it capture the spirit of Shadowrun.

Nice work!
Note : I've never played any previous Shadowrun titles. Very nice isometric view Strategy RPG : discuss with people to get your next mission, setup your team & equipment, go on mission. You play real time until an enemy is within reach, it then switches to turn base strategy until the area is cleared up. Each characters have an amount of Action Points. The game gives you some amount of freedom and decision through the discussions : though not as much as a real RPG, it still sufficient to give you the will to restart the game a second time & try out other outcomes. Some choices will have some requirement (e.g. : minimum intelligence, etc.) The story is quite well played (but short : most of the missions are actually optional side quests) and characters are very well defined. If you play most of the optional missions, I think the game is about 20 hours long or so (and replay-able) On the down side : - A.I. is very flawed : enemies can be literally suicidal : you can force them to sit next to you, waiting to be shot. - Due to the above, the game isn't very challenging : on my first play, I finished the game in hard mode without much of a challenge (except the very last shootout : I failed the first time). - A tutorial would have been welcome. It's only half way through the game that I started to master it. And I still have no idea whether it is possible to exchanges inventories among the team. - No voice over (though music and sound effects are well done). - I didn't find a way to exchange inventories among the team ? Seriously ? you can't hand a grenade to your mate ? what the ... ?

Good Game, Bad Combat
It's a pretty good RPG - until it makes you do combat. It's just the usual X-COM stuff, but enemies are total bullet sponges even on easy. Where I'm at in the game, every humanoid enemy has fifty health, more for the physical races. Even if you have up to date weapons, that still means hitting them a lot, assuming you hit every shot. With the hit rates you get, that's not likely. But a lot of fights the enemy seems as hard-pressed to kill you as you are them, just making it more a slog than anything difficult. You can skip combat sometimes with the right perks or stats, which is more than Returns usually let you do, but there's still no getting away from it entirely, and virtually every mandatory mission I've had to do involves a fire fight at the end. I like all the characters and the setting, but having to waste time shooting grunts all the time is a drag. It seems odd to say the combat is the weakest part of an RPG, but that's what I've thought about both Shadowrun games so far.

What the 1st Shadowrun Should Have Been
This is what I was expecting with the first Shadowrun game. A good story, some companions with character development and some interesting ways of going about objectives besides just fight everything. My only issues are more nitpicky than anything but are primarily combat related. I find the the karma system most character builds don't really come together until the later half of the game. The chance to hit for many spells and attack seemed lower than it should have been making a lot of fights kind of annoying. Also you couldn't really customize your team's equipment as much as your main character which kind of annoyed me since you couldn't compare gear when shopping unless that specific character was with you (most games give some way of comparing gear with party members even if they aren't physically present). So what let me down was less the story and characters, but the combat didn't feel as fulfilling as it could have been in my mind. This game is definitely worth checking out though as there's so many good points that outweigh the bad. For the game constantly won me other despire all my doubts.
