Shadowcat

Pretty bad
Shadow Warrior got a ton of advertising. You couldn't open a game mag without a full page (or two) asking you if you fancied some Wang. As the next big game from the makers of Duke 3D, people couldn't wait to get their hands on it. A decade on, with Duke 3D still considered a classic, Shadow Warrior was all but forgotten by most people. This was not without reason -- Shadow Warrior is not a good game. One of its biggest problems is that it seemed absurdly racist. Admittedly, all of 3D Realms' Build Engine games were based around stereotypes (and Duke 3D and the Redneck Rampage series both did well), but this was different. Duke is a dick, but the joke is on him rather than anyone else. I don't know the US well enough to know whether many people considered Redneck Rampage offensive (and I never played it myself), but obviously a sufficiently large proportion of people found it funny, and it's usually safer territory making fun of your 'own' (home country) culture. Shadow Warrior was FAR more uncomfortable territory. If the gameplay was great, maybe I could have enjoyed the game regardless -- but the game wasn't even fun to play. It may not be the worst game ever made, but it's not one that I would recommend to anyone. Now that it's free I guess you could decide for yourself at only the cost of your time; but if I was pining for a Build Engine shooter, I would pick virtually anything else first. (In particular, if you haven't played it, I wholeheartedly recommend "Blood", which is truly excellent.) As you'll have gathered, I thought the original "Shadow Warrior" was an embarrassment and best forgotten; so the most surreal part of the story happened 15 years later, when Flying Wild Hog released their reboot, not only confounding me with their decision to reboot this of all games, but blowing all my expectations out of the water by producing the best FPS of the year. My advice is to play that one, and just pretend this one doesn't exist.
Hilft dir das weiter?
