Accomplished artistic vision, but...

The devs succeeded in the artistic and visual departments, not so in the gameplay. To put it bluntly, Sea Salt is way too limited in its gameplay (movement, attack and regroup buttons), and the strategic component is nullified by core decisions: no control over your units, limited field of view (no zoom out). The boss battles and the arena may be the only things to salvage from it. The content is also meager, do not expect dozens of hours out of it. Lastly, the options menu needs some work to bring proper controller key bindings, and mouse controls desperately needs to be implemented. I will consider updating my review when this game receives the proper support it needs.

Man I still love this

The reviews on the store page say common bad points: lack of strategies, uncomfortable keyboard and mouse control, and complaints about general controls. And I agree. Some minor discomforts exist in this game. Still I love the story and mood that are supported with the great background music. Horror and darkness are well depicted in the game. Reading through background story of bosses, minions and apostles is so interesting. Personally I value plots and moods of a game specifically, and maybe that is why I love this game so much. It would be much better if I could see some dialogues between enemies talking in their side of view, like how horrified they are and bluffing about dagon's wrath, or even executing the community members for upsetting dagon. Overall, I love this game. Still some fixes would be appreciated.

Lack of interesting features

I am somewhat disappointed in this game after 5 hours of gameplay. From an aesthetic point of view, the pixel graphics are quite appealing and the background story, told in short cutscenes, is quite entertaining (in a morbid way). However, the gameplay is banal and under-complex. The strategic aspect is extremely limited and success merely depends on pressing the spacebar (for attacking) and releasing the spacebar (for regrouping and defense) at the right point. This is a pity, since one could see a lot of potential in the game, given mechanics that are more complex: Why is there no RPG system that let you upgrade your units or am economic system that let you manage resources? Although you can unlock so called “apostles” that offer some limited variation in gameplay, I was able to unlock 5 out of 6 of them in a few hours and feel like the game has nothing more to offer in terms of features. Don’t go in expecting a game that keeps you interested for a long time. Given its current state, I would not recommend sea of salt at its full price.

For Lovecraft fans

Playing as a mass of abyssal horrors rolling through town, literally tearing through anything that stands in your way, is devilishly fun. I've been playing this game on and off since release - it's easily one of my favourite indies, and one of the best Lovecraftian games I've experienced (even if it isn't the kind to make your skin crawl). Definitely pick this up if you want something that does HP Lovecraft's works justice, with the added bonus of the creators' unique spin. The mood - especially the music and design - makes Sea Salt one of the few games that really "gets" the original works, without wanting to emulate them 1:1. I won't spoil anything, but let's just say the plot is very true to the spirit of what Lovecraft would write about: humans getting in too deep with something they have no business dealing with... Sadly, the gameplay is a little lacking. I personally enjoyed the simple mechanics (attack, defend/regroup, move). And I really got a kick out of variety and strategy in the different units. But it would have been nice if my units didn't decide to go for a frolic across the whole town, aggroing everything along the way, when I just wanted them to sneakily regroup behind cover. Little things like that made the game frustrating at times, but never enough to make me want to walk away or give up entirely. There were also a few typos, mainly in the Book of Dagon (in-game bestiary) which I found disappointing because they broke my immersion in what is otherwise a solid game. Still highly recmommend for anyone who loves Lovecraft's work!

It's alright and fun. Pick it up on sale

Right off the bat I get mobile port vibes from the game. There's no mouse control and you're basically limited to wasd and the space bar. It's not really a strategy game. You do not control your minions. You can't even separate them out. You just hit space and that tells them to attack whatever's closest to them. The best you can do, strategy wise, is release the space bar so they'll stop focusing on what they're attacking and follow the cursor. Starting off it feels very bare bones. However, I really do like having a mindless army of horrors that will swarm and consume everything in it's path. I like the setting and I feel like they've hit the atmosphere and feel of the game right on the head. I think it's worth your while to pick it though at this point in time I'm not sure if it's worth the full $15USD
