A classic

That's a solid classic psychological horror point and click adventure game. No bullshit. The story's great. Just remember to save regularly in case you have a crash. It's rare but happens. No soft-lock, only one or two puzzles that are "very hard" (by that I mean you may need some help to get the puzzle done, not to figure out what you're supposed to do), but not too easy either. Highly recommended!

surprisingly fun

I think that this could have a "point and click" tag (for some reason it doesn't), but if it did, I would probably have never played it. My issue with point and click in general is that I feel like I am reverse engineering a game developers thought process in stead of playing a game. It happens here too and I don't think I would have been able to finish it without using a guide. This is accompanied by some "action" sequences that will give you a hard time because it's not always easy to make the character do what you want to do (you move by holding right mouse button and pointing it on the screen relative to where your character is to make him go in that direction). Now that sounds bad by itself, but I still had a lot of fun with this. In fact, it's a great classic game, as most reviews will tell you. There is a good story, a very imaginative way of telling it, voice acting with good writing, cool and varied gameplay types (some chapters could be a game by themselves), memorable characters, puzzles are good (there are no direct hints so you need to pay attention and do some thinking), old but skillfully made graphics, a satisfying ending and more. It knows how to surprise in all the right ways and I predict you can't help but smile as you click your way through it. I hope nobody will be put off by the horror tag. There are some quite unsettling scene's present, but overall I found the primary intention is not to scare you. It’s not a kids game either but the scenes support the story and, in my opinion, are not designed or presented as being threatening or haunting. The story is about fighting insanity and actually has some humorous ways of portraying it. If you want something refreshing and challenging, with a good story, have some time to get into it and don't mind being required to pay attention to details to progress, then you will do yourself a favor by giving it a go.

A nice point n click adventure

Sanitarium is funny and has good graphics and sound. The story is interesting. Too bad for the not so nice controls, but nothing too crazy to use.

Wacky and Goofy experience

This is a essential experience if you are a fan of point and click games. I personally feel as though this game has TRANSFORMOGRAPHAGIZED the P&C genre and it's feels so unfortunate that this hasd almost become a hidden gem. Some puzzles require an extra ounce of IQ that I was severely lacking in many instances but if you are a never giver upper it will never stop you. last puzzle at boss was giga easy because im am a god gamer.

Surreal, atmospheric point-and-click

Sanitarium is a horror point-and-click adventure game, where you play as an amnesiac man who woke up in an insane asylum after a car crash. He tries to figure his identity and a way out, but his broken mind also conjures up alternate realities relevant with his memories, such as a circus, alien world, and Aztec village. We get to play as other characters sometimes in these realities, each with their own personalities and struggles. Gameplay follows the usual formula of finding objects and using them, also solving puzzles and minigames. One thing I enjoy is that despite being an older title, unlike many of the genre of its age, the puzzles are quite simple and logical, yet also manage to be creative due to its setting. One of my favorite puzzle is the part where we can switch characters at will, and puzzles that require their different abilities such as strength or small size. Too bad that section was too short, it should've been longer. My problem with this game is the buggy controls. It's pretty strange that you cannot click to go somewhere, you'd have to hold the right mouse button or use arrow keys, but even worse that sometimes when you launch the game or load a save, it bugs and gets stuck in the movement mode. Loading a save or relaunching the game usually fixes this, but I still don't understand what really causes or fixes this. In conclusion, if you like point-and-click games, especially the older ones, you'll have a great time playing Sanitarium. Especially if you like the ones that are a bit surreal or with a touch of horror. It's not too difficult, and not too scary either. If it doesn't launch for you as it did for me, you can simply download a different version of ScummVM and replace the one in the game folder.
