Return of the Obra Dinn

Return of the Obra Dinn is a petty damn solid game but more importantly its a memorable experience that everyone should at least try. The story is not amazing and I was a little let down by the ending but I was never bored, it was gripping right from the start and will surprise you with some very carefully placed "oh shit" moments. The audio quality in general is amazing, music has great timing and is tailored to the mood of the situation(for the most part). The ques for when you go back in time are great as well, does a good job of building anticipation. Gameplay boils down to looking at a corpse and opening the watch or "memento morium" to see the exact point of death. At that point you can observe details that help determine who the victim was, if they died or escaped, and who/what killed them. Its a game of deduction and process of elimination(especially at the end) that is elevated by the stellar voice acting and character designs. The art style works for what the story is going for, its simple but charming in a rugged sort of way that gives the Obra Dinn a very distinct atmosphere of unsettling intrigue. While it may not have the replayability factor that Papers Please did it goes above and beyond when it comes to presentation and story, its one of those games where you want to erase your memories of it just to experience it for the first time again.

Having played (and loved) Lucas Pope's "Papers, please" previously, I knew that this game would be worth buying and playing. However, I decided time and time again not to make the purchase, mostly because of the 2-color graphics. Now that I've finally bought and completed the game, I have to say that the artistic style only helps to make the story that more mysterious. The game doesn't hold your hand, so determining "the fates" can be hard at times. Only after playing over half of the game I noticed things, that could have helped me really determine a person's identity, instead of guessing it. That doesn't determine from giving the game a five star rating. It's been a long time since I've been this captivated by a story in a game.

I went in knowing very little about the game and I am so glad I did. Coming from someone who usually loathes non-linear storytelling I absolutely adored this and cannot wait to see what Lucas Pop has in store next. Finished it in three sittings totally around 11 hours to 100% complete the game and see the true ending. Only negative I will say is that as you need to revisit memories it can be quite cumbersome. I found myself spending more time than I would like to admit moving from place to place in order to revisit memories.

Games like Obra Dinn are proof that videogames is a medium like no other for storytelling, with infinite possibilities and great ideas yet to explore. I will not say that the way of unveiling the story is unique of this game, but it does it so cleverly, with such care for the detail, that for me it was an absolute delight to uncover the mystery of the Obra Dinn. I was so hooked to the game, so interested in the plot, so challenged by mystery, that I cannot remember any other game that had me like this. And then the audio design is also great, the music sounds good but doesn't get in the way or annoys, and the voices are good too. The graphic design may be or not be of your taste, but it is a different and interesting choice, making it even a more unique game. Even if the graphic design doesn't suit you, the story and the cleverness of this game truly deserves to be enjoyed. A truly delightful game from beginning to end.

Im allgemeinen ist das Spiel sehr interessant. Die Grafik ist etwas ungewöhnlich, aber passt gut zum Spiel. In ein oder zwei Fällen war es etwas problematisch für mich zu erkennen was passiert. Man schaut sich einzelne Szenen an die sich auf dem Schiff abgespielt haben und identifiziert anhand dessen was man dort sieht und hört, wer wer ist und was mit ihnen passiert ist. Einige sind relativ einfach zu identifizieren und sind schnell geklärt. Für andere muss man schon genau aufpassen und auf kleinste Details achten. Ich muss zugeben das ich in ein paar Fällen einfach die Möglichkeiten ausprobiert habe, bis mir das Spiel alles verifiziert hat. Das war entweder weil ich die Namen von 2 oder 3 Charakteren eingrenzen konnte, aber nicht genau identifizieren konnte wer von ihnen nun wer ist. Bei den Schicksalen dagegen muss ich leider sagen, dass ein paar von ihnen nicht eindeutig sind. z.B. Ein Charakter wurde von einer Kanone zerquetscht, diese Kanone wurde allerdings von einer Bestie gehalten. Für mich war hier nicht klar, ob ich Bestie oder Kanone eingeben soll. 2 Charaktere standen hintereinander vor einer Kanone und starben als sie losging. Erwartet wurde das einer explodiert ist und der andere durch die Kanone zerfetzt wurde. Für mich ist immernoch nicht klar warum nicht beide das gleiche haben. Ein Fall denke ich kam durch eine schlechte Übersetzung, in einem Dialog wurde gesagt die Person wurde zerfetzt, gemeint war aber zerrissen. Für das Buch hätte ich mir ein paar Filteroptionen gewünscht, z.B. in den Skizzen unidentifizierte Personen hervorheben. Wenn man den Täter auswählen soll, wäre es gut wenn man die Option hätte sie mit der Person in den Skizzen zu verlinken. Generell direkt im Spiel ein paar mehr Optionen für Notizen wären hilfreich gewesen. Die Lesezeichen die man sich setzen konnte für Personen waren dagegen ziemlich nutzlos.
