Resident Evil

It would of been 5 stars if it wasn't the Director's Cut. Good thing for mods and emulation.

This is the original Resident Evil game, the one you probably remember experiencing for the first time on the PlayStation. As great and iconic as it is, this version of the game is now completely outdated. None of the director's cut content is here, the cutscenes can't be skipped (which is horrid for subsequent runs as well as speedruns), the game is displayed in its original resolution which is a shame considering how detailed the textures are for the time, the 3D models aren't the updated ones from the DS version... The splash screen also comes blaring at full volume in all its late 90s, low-quality glory, so be careful to turn the volume down before booting the game up. At least my Nacon PS4 controller is supported. If you're looking for a better version to play, either seek the GameCube remake or the Deadly Silence version for the DS.

For a so called "preservation program" I expected much better. The game doesn't run properly on linux (the "de facto" best preservation platform). There is no way (at least that I found) to get the cutscenes to show, only audio plays. Technical difficulties, you might argue. Sure... I'll just play the free fan patched version, REbirth, which happens to run PERFECTLY underneath linux.

When I was five, this game scared the hell out of me. Now, it makes me laugh thanks to its meme-worthy dialogue. It's still a good time, and any modern fan of the series who didn't get to play this should absolutely give it a try if they can spare the $10, or $24 for the bundle. I'm just saying, I'd absolutely pay an extra few bucks for the DX version's content.

RE (1996) is my all-time favourite game in the RE series, I've played various versions of it on different systems, such as: Sega Saturn, Playstation, Nintendo DS, PC (before this re-release). Basically, I LOVE this game and this version on the PC is fantastic. The framerate is better, the graphics are sharper, and the controls are silky smooth and quick to respond, in fact took me about half a playthrough to adjust to faster and higher performance controls and playthrough; the previous versions of this game do have a lower frame rate, so it was like going from swimming in treacle to sliding down a chute that was covered in grease, but once you adjust, you'll never want to go back to the other versions of RE 1996. One of the best parts about this game is that as with the OG PC release, this re-release also rewards both characters with automatic weapons if you complete the game in under 3 hours; let me tell you, these guns are SO much fun and allow you take whizz through the game, wiping out every enemy and boss with ease. It's also kind of cathartic, especially when wiping the floor with a boss that can normally be a pain in the backside. It also saves you from needing to acquire any other weapons and ammo as you simply DON'T need them!! If there is just ONE thing that I wish could happen to make things better, it would be Capcom allowing GOG to re-release a PC version of the RE1 Director's Cut (NOT the Dualshock one though), I love the arrange mode version of the game!! Please, please, please give this some title some love, it's frequently overshadowed by RE2 (1998); which is a good game in itself, but completely lacks the tension, atmosphere, OST and true survival horror vibes that RE (1996) brought to the table.
