Surprisingly good by 3DO standards
Two years after Doom 1, and where other FPS games tended to take themselves very seriously, this one throws farting monsters at you pretty much right out the gate. You start off with very few weapons but as your arsenal expands, so does your ability to handle the threats as they come. You can get the jetpack as early as Level 2, and it's a godsend for the sheer verticality of many of these levels. Some of them are mazelike, you will definitely get lost, but I'm good at navigation so it wasn't that bad for me. The weapons themselves seem to focus on fun and spectacle over practicality, though you do get your Set so to speak. Laser blaster and SMG for the weaker low-tier enemies as well as the faster and flying ones, though you will also use it earlier on for the turrets, rocket launcher for the bigger slower heavies and to more easily deal with turrets and flying mines, eventually you get a bigger more powerful beam blaster as well as a purple cannon that you can hurt yourself with by accident due to the ricocheting projectiles, and the missile cam is just hilariously overpowered if you can maneuver it right. There's even a funny martial-arts inspired backflip dodge. I don't know if it really helps dodge projectiles but if you're feeling stylish it could be fun to use. Night Dive did a great job remaking this and giving quality of life features. I might try to 100% this in the future. But if it's a few things I need to point out, it's that getting all monsters on certain levels is really hard to do. Alleys might be impossible, one of the turrets turned into a strange blue and white checkered box texture that couldn't attack or be killed. Perhaps it wasn't the case in the original but the lack of music in any of the levels makes it less exciting than the trailers might have you believe. Also, it's very unclear what the goal of Puzzle / the Maze is in order to access the secret level, I still have yet to do it. All in all, use your best judgement if you want to play.
Hilft dir das weiter?
