Not bad, but I expected more
I’m giving 4 stars, because it is one of the best RPGs since Baldur’s Gate II. On the other hand, I’m a little disappointed, because I expected more. I like the character development and the combat system. Pillars of Eternity got rid of some annoying features of Infiniti Engine game system and evolved in good way. I like the lack of level scaling and I like the necessity to flee from some places, if you get there to early. The weakest part of combat system is Enemy AI. After few fights he behavior of enemies become very predictable. I would expect that 15 years after BG II the enemies (at least those who are supposed to be intelligent according to the RP) would adapt better to player’s tactic. It doesn’t mean, all combats are easy. It means that high difficulty of some encounters is achieved by strong enemies or numerous enemies, not by smart enemies. The other thing I’m missing very much are epic items with unique properties. I’m missing items like Carsomyr or Crom Fayer. The plot behind the PoE is not bad, but I don’t feel drown into the story very much. The story progression is much less thrilling, attractive and interesting than story progression in BG II. I liked even the story progression In Dragon Age: Origins more than in PoE. Also the personalities of NPCs were much more interesting in BG II and DA: O. So the conclusion: PoE is not bad game, but I expected much more from it regarding the high budget and development time.
