A brilliant RPG!

The character customization is really in depth: not only do you pick a class and a race (like many other RPG's) but you also get to customize the history of every character you create, THE HISTORY which can also be mentioned in dialogue as you continue to play the game. The game mechanics are very engaging; the fighting never gets old and the world is vast with mystery, puzzles, dungeons and followers to recruit as you adventure. Games like this aren't made too often today. It's really sad to see that Obsidian had to make a kickstarter for the game since games like this shouldn't even need one. I suppose if you want a good game these days, you have to fund it yourself which I'm glad so many people did otherwise I wouldn't be able to experience this. This game tips its hat to the old school RPG games while also providing a really good modern experience. Pick it up, you won't regret it! :)

Masterpiece

You can see right away how much detail and work went into this game. I personally prefer Pillars 1 over Pillars 2. I've played multiple playthroughs and absolutely love this game. I already have this on Steam but i am buying this again on GOG because it is Christmas. Merry Christmas Obsidian team!

Flawed Masterpeice

Pillars of Eternity was my first real cRPG, and it took me several tries to get into it. However, after starting a game and finally sticking with it, I can say this was a great game and an enjoyable RPG, with a few flaws. The good: The writing, setting, story, and characters are fantastic as you would expect from Obsidian. While many people seem to have an issue with the RTWP combat, I found it mostly enjoyable. Overall, if you let this game get its narrative hooks into you, you're in for quite a treat. As for the bad: While I found the combat enjoyable enough, there was A LOT of it - too much in some areas, in my opinion. On top of that, on the hard difficulty (and above), you need to treat almost every encounter as a serious threat. So there's a lot of combat that you have meticiously micro-manage. While this is alleviated on the normal difficult, many combats become less enjoyable because they require very little thought. It's an interesting conundrum - do I spend 40 of my 60 hours with this game micro-managing fights, or do I sleepwalk through fights and get bored with the combat? Also, while the game has a mostly fantastic presentation there are certain fights where it can be a little difficult to actually tell what is happening. The DLC did not feel particulary well integrated into the game. Story-wise, the dlc's writing is at a similar level as to the rest of the game. However, there is an issue with ludonarrative dissonance depending on when you decide to do the DLC, and it's not very clear as to when you are expected to do the dlc along the main quest. Additionally, the dlc throws off the balance of the rest of the game. This can be alleviated with level scaling, but I wish the game was balanced with the dlc in mind. Finally, there are bugs. Again, as to be expected with Obsidian. They are frustrating when they crop up, but not enough to ruin enjoyment. Many can be solved by a reload (which takes a while with the loading screens).

You wait for something to catch you ...

I'm really into these old D&D games: BG, IWD, PS:T, and of course a lot of other ones outside of that. I was really looking for something modernizing D&D, allowing focus on story, characters, music, quests. PoE does a somewhat good job in ... not these parts: Good looking maps, complex and interesting char classes, a familiar fighting system salted with real-time things you may know from Dragon Age. UI is clean and sane, visual effects are good, lots of stuff that was probably designed to make me happy. Unfortunately, area chaning times really stick out badly, no matter how small the maps are that you are switching. But then ... Plot? You, John Doe, notice that you can read souls. Quests? Well, the ordinary RPG stuff. Interesting world or setting? Fairly exchangable, little context. Interesting people? Absolutely not, nothing at all. Tension, turning points, events? Remember the moment you spot a lot of people hanging on a tree, that's probably the peak of memory of this game. Music? It's Ok but nothing to remember. The game feels like a big checklist of nice features and good assets & maps that at some point asked for something intresting to happen there. If you know Unreal 2, you probably get idea. If you are like me, and play an RPG to wait for something remotely exciting to happen any when and then, like a memorable fight, a chatty (N)PC that wants to bond with you, looking at a nice intro video, discovering a new piece of epic music or a dramatic cut-scene or dialogue, or discovering a long-awaited skill or weapon for progress, then better don't play PoE. If you like to fill your time with some fantasy fighting and exploration, well yes, this may be worth a try.

Great

Awesome game in the spirit of old school CRPG a la BG1/BG2. If you don't like that style of game, you will probably dislike this game. Check out PoE2 for a different experience, they are to me very different games.
