In the near future a new Exodus begins, the remnants of human civilization have to leave the perishing Earth and start traveling into the Psychosphere. The ones who call themselves the Spirits - new pastors of the human race, believe that a new planet, suitable for living, will be found in the Psychosphere. Colossal towns-arks, carrying hundreds of colonists, have been traveling for centuries through hostile worlds of Psychosphere under the guidance of Spirits. Their destination was the New Earth that was to replace their old home. All passed worlds have been connected by portals, that is how the Chain of Worlds has been created.
But the end of the hard tests is not in sight, and finally due to the despotism of Spirits and the underground intrigues Exodus went to pieces. New factions have arisen - the Empire and the Harkback. Each faction had their own goals and philosophy. The Harkbacks believed that the old Earth has not died, and the Empire - the most mysterious faction - believed that humans should stay in the Chain of Worlds. The antagonism boiled into a war that has been going on for many decades in many worlds.
Whereas the Spirits are on the way to their destination and the Harkbacks are seeking the mythical Earth, the Emperor builds up his Sponge Empire using automatic bases - his Vice Frames. He does not believe in the old or in the new Earth.
Secretly the Emperor creates the Mechanical Spirit - a super mechanism to help him discover new Worlds. Only the Emperor's mortal foes the Spirits could discover new worlds, and that was the source of their power. But now the new time has come.
One of the Vice frames starts testing this mechanism, it leads to the appearance of a super mind - Mechanical Messiah and the discovery of the parallel Chain of the Psycho-sphere Worlds. We also meet the "lost" Exodus Frames and find traces of the mysterious alien race. The three sides are in the middle of the deadly battle: the Scourge against the Emperor's Slaves, Lash of the Spirits against the Calling of Messiah, a dead truth against a newborn lie.
Who are the Spirits - savers or killers of the human race? Who is Messiah judge or a puppet? Who is the Emperor? Who will win? The player will find out the answer during the spectacular single player campaign in Perimeter: Emperor's Testament.
Fast paced Real-Time-Strategy action
Construct or destroy the very gameworld environments themselves using terraforming
Vast singleplayer campaign expanding the story of the original Perimeter
Disappointing expansion to one of my favourite games. Most of the narrative elements are reused from its predecessor. The substance of the plot concerns a few loose threads that were set up in Perimeter, but their exploration here feels perfunctory, lacking the spirit and sparkle that had made the strange world on display come alive. The new faction offers little differentiation in gameplay. I couldn't really advise anyone other than real fans of Perimeter to bother. (All the same, I don't regret buying my boxed copy, even just because it took me so long to track down. It's a reminder to temper my expectations.)
When you never played this game before you will probably feel quite confused and lost, and you might give up before the beauty of this game unfolds in front of you. I think that's why this game isn't a classic.
This game is a very fresh approach to the RTS genre. There are so many new ideas, from energy management (which allows you to take over large chunks of the enemy defence) to terraforming (digging trenches to stop the enemy advance) to underground combat, force fields and unit transformation. Oh, and you can (and have to) move your headquarter over the map, while you should make sure that your energy network is still working with the energy source moving.
The problem is, that there is no tutorial or tooltips. You have something like 30 unit types, but you have no idea what's the difference between them. For example the "Unseen" unit can't attack, but it's also not invisible. I always use the same 3 units, and the underground ones are uber anyway when it comes to demolishing the enemy base. Often you see the AI doing something like digging a trench in your island, and then you figure out, that you can do that too.
The missions are nice and address different aspects of the game mechanics. However the AI is stupid. I mean, I don't need the AI to throw units at me left right and center. But in this game the AI is just not using mobile units at all, or just in some very, very limited way.
So in the end this game is not so much an RTS but more a base-building puzzle game. It could be a fantastic, hardcore RTS with a strong AI or in Multiplayer, however.
By the way, spoiler alert, in that early mission where you have to protect the Mechanical Spirit until he is built: instead of rage quitting simply do nothing and wait for your builders to built him. The more you do, the less energy will be used to built him and the more you get bbq'ed by the super strong enemies.
NOT RECOMMENDED. It's a lazy sequel game to a game famous for its craptastic, over-convoluted and boring gameplay. Here, the campaign starts from being garbage, instead of starting okay and getting drastically worse over time. "If you serve well, you can become the lowest of the low slaves for the Empire." Wow, riveting stuff. Instead of story-telling and lore, the briefings are now filled with this "you are scum" worse-than-nothing filler crap.
If you want a fun game of this variety, look up Creeper World and its variants. THIS IS NOT IT. Perimeter games are all about excessive difficulty (to pad out the lack of variety and content). Emperor's Testament is even harsher in this aspect. Like in the first game, every mission is a test of some kind. You don't gain anything from beating missions, so the game practically caters to the people with masochistic tendencies.
I quit when the game put me butt-naked next to an escort building and kept spawning the end-game big snake to wreck the building before I could build anything beyond a couple energy cores. If that was too easy, there was also a crap-ton of Scourge crows constantly spawning to make it even more cheap. Knowing the dev style, even this... multi-way ravishment is on the "easier side" and this is just the Easy difficulty. The higher ones are even rougher.
My previous review for this game is the SIXTH review of mine, I am aware of, to have been just "quietly removed" for NO reason. Certainly no reasons or notice was given by any of GOG's moderation staff!
Despite this rabid cancellation of criticism, this game is STILL 1-star excrement, and I see no need to repeat myself. I have already re-written my review for the prequel to this game, "Perimeter", and everything said in that also applies to "Perimeter - Emporer's Testament".
