Original and well done
(complete version cos little space: http://www.mediafire.com/view/n4gal6ag74gb7hn/Papers,_please_REVIEW.pdf) Would you tell a friend about the game the chance said friend will stare at you with round eyes is very high. However, video games can turn everything interesting if done right, even the most unexpected subject. So here we are, playing an immigration officer and head of a family; for a month, you’ll deal with the paperwork, immigrants, criminals, soldiers and a secret organization, having to keep enough money for yourself and your family; all that sitting on your chair in a little box. How can such a game be entertaining ? Let’s see it together. Gameplay : Your main aim will be to check out whether or not the papers are in orders and act accordingly. Remember all the games which quickly turn boring once all game mechanics were taught ? Well, this game avoids that trap: it adds new GMs and changes the rules on a regular basis, making it hard to be bored. However, keep in mind it also leads that some GMs will disappear after some time and you won’t always be warned about it ; I assume to avoid overflow as each day is timed. Soundtrack and sound design : 4 songs, in total 6 minutes ; that’s the soundtrack of the game and you won’t hear them most of the time (not during the work hours). However, the sound design is well done : background noises : wind and traffic, combined with the sounds of your material for your work and some other minimalistic sound effects, and that’s all. And yet, it works, you don’t feel the absence of the songs, too concentrated on your task and we could even assume it could be distracting if it was there. Story + Characters : Let’s be straight, the characters don’t have a personality, at best a few of them have basic traits. And if some reviewers will tell you the story is deep, I can only disagree with it. [incomplete....continued in the file provided]
