Very Well Designed

This First-Person Shooter is on the twitchy side, but unlike in Doom and its ilk, you have mouselook, checkpoints that both heal and save, and an unbelievable arsenal. In the base game, you only have 5 weapons, but not only does each one feature alternate fire with completely different ammo, they also fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. Despite having so few weapons, the game is designed in a way that makes them count, so few, if any, get neglected. This comes bundled with the Battle out of Hell expansion pack, which adds 10 new levels and 2 new weapons, which are even better than the ones you'd already had! The weapon design is very creative, and even though you don't have as much variety as in a lot of Shooters, what you have remains consistently both fun and useful. The levels are mostly designed well; they're not labyrinthine, and you usually have something guiding you on top of that. Occasionally, you'll get one that's really frustratingly designed. Or a boss fight; the final boss fight of the base game is INFURIATING. Overall, though, there's a lot of fun to be had, if you're into the visceral. The visuals look good, and while it's not a neon explosion, there's enough color that it doesn't look like it's made of mud and stone. There's a lot of variety in enemies, too; it's rare that you run into the same ones in even 2 different levels. The story is what it needs to be, and doesn't go much beyond that, but creates a decent lore, and your main character is a good, gruff tooth-kicker. The music is... well, if you've ever listened to a Rock station in 2004, it's that; not much more can be said. The sound effects are pretty good - many guns pack that cathartic punch - but I did notice that some of the grunts were from other Shooters I've played, but it's been so long that I don't remember which ones. Overall, if you like First-Person Shooters, you'll probably have a great time with this.

One of the best classic shooters

Original Painkiller is in my TOP ten of favourite games. At first I thought that it's just a Serious Sam'esqe game, but after playing it I don't even think to play Serious Sam ever again. Painkiller is much more... serious... and not cartoony. Why I love this game: * It has great levels, varying in scale and theme (gothic, industrial, medieval and may be others). Each non-boss level has several secrets, some of them are pretty hard to even find, not saying about reach; * Solid visual style and enemy design which is consistent from the beggining to the end of the game (I'm talking about original game, not the addon); * Giant bosses that can be pretty hard to kill; * impressive ambient and battle music. The latter was performed by Polish metal band Mech and is one of the most special thing about the game; * Fun physics and dismembering. I was one the first games that had physics on such a level (ragdoll, destroyable objects). For me it was the first such game before Half-Life 2 came out later in same year. And Painkiller is much better nevertheless. * Not too many weapons, and they all are useful, even the first one (Painkiller). There are five weapons (I don't count any other games in series), each has two firing modes, practically making of them two weapons. But don't even try to play addon included in Black Edition (and, on that matter, any other Painkiller game). Even if it was made by the same studio, it's obvius that it was created by other people. It becomes apperent then you see some freak instead of Daniel in it's cutscenes, plain bad and amature enemy design, and absolutely incosistent with original game visual and gameplay style. So I think original team that worked on Painkiller is what made it so great. So I'm afraid that we will never see a sequel worth of the first Painkiller. But at least we have this excellent game that still holds up. I just hope that developers (or who's there) will release source code as was made with Serious Sam recently.

Broke Edition

This game appears to be an enjoyable, classic first-person shooter. The main features of the gameplay are the massive amounts of enemies to tear through, large open levels to circle-strafe about, and the tarot card collectibles to add a sense of progression and some incentive to explore. However, it became apparent in a few hours of play that the game seems susceptible to not only crashing, but also the corruption of save files. Overall, this game does not seem to be worth the fuss of dealing with lost progress or using fan-made fixes to complete it. The current state of this release is simply not acceptable.

Almost a sadistic mood?

This is the 2nd time around owning this fps classic. If you ever get in a "I just wanna kill everything mood!", purchase and install this. Fire it up when you get in that type of mood, and I can assure you that you will get any frustrations out in a couple of hours. Great graphics still, and sound! I've found the best time to play this game series, is in a dark room, later at night. Wow! You won't regret purchasing this piece of art! I give it a 10.
