The real wild west game

I will begin this opinion piece by saying that I haven't even heard about this game back in the 90's. I played all other shooters but the bootleggers didn't sell this one ;) So there I was, looking for a good old game on GOG and I found this gem, bought it on sale and left it because I thought it was just an average mid 90's shooter. Oh boy was I wrong! I played the game on bad difficulty aka medium, and it was very hard. But once you get used to floaty movement and reloading your guns this game becomes a real joy to play. This game was made by LucasArts studio so there is a story told through cartoonish cutscenes. It is a generic story but it is a westernlike game so that is ok. The game begins with number 1138 referencing George Lucas first movie THX 1138. You can also find other references like the chicken sound when you put your mouse over quit button etc. OST is great and adds to the overall atosphere, you can clearly hear that the author was influenced by the maestro Ennio Morricone. Back to the title of this review, this is without a doubt the best wild west game ever made, slim pickings I know, but Red Dead and Call Of Juarez don't really feel like you are really a badasss cowboy on a revenge quest. Everything in this game was made so that you the player gets a real western shooting simulator. Great game in general. Outside the main story you have 9 historical missions, not all of them are good but some really interesting concepts in there. So is the game perfect ? Of course not. There are some open area maps that are a bit boring and few guns and dynamite that are almost useless. Now why did Nightdive remaster Rise Of The Triad, Turok 2 and 3 and some other games before this objectively better game is beyond me. I am saying this because this game is crashing often and does't have any features that would make it a much better experience. Always a shame to see great games like this not being optimized for modern systems. Buy it ! :)

Deutsche Review!

Outlaws, da werden Erinnungen wach. Immer mal daran gedacht, sehnsüchtig nach neueren Westernspielen geschaut (Call of Juarez usw), aber irgendwie wars nie die gleiche Stimmung. Mal fehlte der Sound, mal nervte das Schnellziehminispiel, mal die Level Architektur und wenn man Outlaws heute spielt merkt man einfach die tolle Story, die großartige Musik und die vielen stimmigen Details, die in einem Westernspiel nicht fehlen dürfen. Leider hatte ich nie eine Playstation, so dass ich nie in den Genuss von RDT. gekommen bin, vielleicht reicht das näher heran. Wobei Call of Juarez auch schon nahe dran ist. Aber hier geht einem die Geschichte noch näher und das liegt wohl auch an der Nostalgie. Leider weiss ich selbst nach fast 20 Jahre wie die Geschichte ausgeht und das sagt wohl alles aus. Es bleibt alles in Erinnerung. Der Frust beim ersten Bosskampf, die blank liegenden Nerven in der Wassermühle, weil man immer irgendwie die falsche Abzweigung nimmt oder der Kampf mit der Sniper in der Todesschlucht. Auch die Western typischen Filme zwischen den Leveln bzw. Schauplätzen sind super gemacht. Das Ende ist mir heute noch so bewusst, weil es so grandios gemacht ist. Mein System besteht aus einem Win 64 Bit Rechner, 6 Core Prozzi und 650 GTX Ti, also mehr als ausreichend. GoG hat mal wieder geschafft ein Oldie Game zum Laufen zu bringen. Echt Spitze! Kaufen ist Pflicht ! Viel Spaß im Game.

This is a great first person shooter. Great story, great music, great levels, great gameplay. Definately a great classic. I like the fact that I can use stealth tactics, which is my favorite way to play these types of games. I can duck, run, and hide behind cover, then take em out with my scoped rifle. I admit some of the levels can be tricky but heh we have youtube these days and I had to use it a few times to move on. I would love to see an outlaws 2 with updated graphics.

Terrific Fun

I can only add my vote to those that say this is a brilliant game. Any fan of the spaghetti westerns will relish the chance to star in your very own adventure, with all the guns you'd like - they've even squeezed a sniper weapon in, with a scope for your rifle - and there are THREE shotguns (although the best is actually the first one you get) You do have to be strategic and ready for enemies around every corner but there's still scope for a bit of run-and-gun and it's great fun running into a room and guning evryone down before they get you - if you manage it :-) I played it on the hardest setting ('Ugly') and while it was tough at times it is doable - although some of the historical missions are very hard at the beginning at that level, with many enemies and little ammo As many have mentioned the soundtrack is superb - it's the only time i've kept the music on through a game, because it's just the perfect accompaniament The graphics are old, yes, but they're good enough, especially for the 'rough' setting of the old West, with its crumbling buildings etc enemy AI is occasionally a litte dumb but it's also often pretty damn smart, with enemies ducking and hiding around corners there are puzzles but if you keep your eyes open and think through the potential uses of the items you pick up, they're all logical enough - there's nothing really annoying here overall it's just great fun and one of the best shooters i've ever played you also really get your money's worth with a good-length core SP mission plus a fistful of other SP missions so git on yer hoss, and ride into the GOG store...
