An excellent action/RPG hybrid with very unique gameplay. Your name is Jack Mower, a 20th century dude who just happened to be sucked into the world of Nox via his TV set. The world is in danger and you have to save it! But before you embark on your epic journey you must choose your path: warrior, wizard, or conjurer.
Choose the path of a warrior, and you will be able to equip and use all manner of swords, battle-axes, war hammers, and chakrams - though you’ll leave the magical mumbo-jumbo up to the Conjurer and Wizard classes. An enchanted weapon is the closest a Warrior gets to magic but that’s OK, because magic is for sissies.
As a Wizard you will explore the mystical art of spell casting, ranging from enemy-confounding illusions to devastating displays of metaphysical force. You’ll also learn to set magical traps containing deadly spell combinations to thwart the unsuspecting foe. Although you’ll have to renounce the use of ungainly swords and armor in the name of your art, you will still be able to wield a staff as a last-ditch physical defense.
If you choose a Conjurer you will be able to magically charm and summon creatures to do your bidding. You can even create a magical creature called a bomber which can wreak sorcerous havoc on your enemies. You’ll also get plenty of experience wielding staves and bows to fend off the few enemies who manage to slip past your minions.
Throwback Thursday Recommendation
We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!
Recommended by Kilg0re_Tr0ut from GOG Stream Team: Nox is a truly underrated game from Westwood Studios. Often written off as a "Diablo-clone", this is really a unique quest oriented action RPG. You play Jack, a young man who (along with his TV) is accidentally teleported to Nox by the evil Hecubah, and it is your job to right things in Nox and eventually defeat her. The story and gameplay adapts to accommodate one of three different character classes you have to choose from, the Warrior, who can't use magic, but has access to all armor and weapon types (except bows and staves), the Conjurer, who can use bows and crossbows, can use some spells, but specialize in summoning monsters that can fight alongside them, and the Wizard class, who specialize in the vast majority of spells in the game, and can even teleport and become invisible. This adds tremendous replayability as playing the game with each character makes for a completely different experience, basically giving you three games in one. Easy to get into, Nox is highly recommended for fans of the genre."

This game is a true classic but I dont know that I could recommend it today now that multiplayer support for it is all but dead. The multiplayer hack and slash pvp was fantastic and played out something akin to Quake or Unreal Tournament except with swords and sorcery. The single player story mode is overly short and nothing special really but at 5.99, it might be worth a purchase anyway.
Humor, gameplay, story, what else can you desire? Among the best balanced games I played in my childhood, Nox was never too hard to be fun, but neither too easy to be boring. Also, the interwoven storylines you get from all three classes makes replaying the game to see all the different storylines a must. Even today worth the price!
A masterpiece which all fans of action rpgs should play atleast once,
or rather three times considering that the story are different for all three classes.
(Though they do somewhat converge near the end.)
The one thing missing from the GoG release is the Nox Quest addon, which is a must for all Nox players,
but fortunately it can be downloaded for free from sites such as Fileplanet.
(It was a free addon to begin with,
so don't worry about breaking any copyright laws.)
This game was incredible, I still have the box but sadly not the CD Key! Even though Westwood graciously gave me a second one, but alas that was lost and Westwood is as dead as Elvis...
This game is one of the most thoroughly enjoyable games I have ever played, it outright competed with anything Blizzard has made, Diablo I and Diablo II being the incredible games they were, NOX honestly is on par with either of them!
The skills feel great, the story is a comedic adventure through a rich and fleshed out world, added to a variety of enemies (even if they do use the old "here's another colour of said bear") you will be having fun for a solid all around polished experience.
The multiplayer was a bit rough, so it never achieved the notoriety of Diablo II, but even so, it was an interesting multiplayer though it won't be much use to people now as I am sure any services are shut down.
But this game, there are much worse ways to spend six dollars.
I remember seeing this in Walmart when it first came out. Always meant to get it since I thought it might be similar to one of my old favorites, Shadowlands on Amiga. After many hours of play I can say that YEP that's about what this is. Wonderful isometric dungeon crawling , hacking, sell casting.... Simple to pick up, tough at time... endlessly fun. One of my favorite games of this type. I found myself playing it more than Skyrim at one point! lol
NOTES: I stopped playing for a time, then went back to play some more after huge amounts of craving, but it started freezing my PC hard. I ended up redownloading and that seems to be working again. Save games are fine, just be sure to keep them (back them up somewhere) and you're good to go. Also, the inventory system came get messy when you save everything. A hovering description window over items would have been nice, but you can use the gadget to ID things and that's nearly as good. Hard to find anything to complain about this little gem.
Perfect score from me! This is why gog.com is so great, I would have forgotten about this one, sure enough.
