War is Hell. NecroVision is a first-person shooter that takes gamers across the frantic battlegrounds of World War I and into a dark underworld of vampires, demons and dark magic.

Seeking adventure, young American Simon Bukner joins the British army in war-torn Europe of 1916. During a particularly ferocious battle, Bukner and his battalion are pushed into a series of dark trenches where they encounter mysterious phenomenon. As they move through the labyrinth they discover that there is a greater evil hiding underneath the battle-fields of the Great War — an evil that is forcing its way into our world and threatens to wipe out humanity. In the depths of this newly discovered underworld, Bukner must confront the dark forces and fight for the survival of mankind.
  • An engrossing storyline blends elements of a traditional war shooter with magic and the supernatural world
  • Players fight with authentic WWI era weapons, powerful magic artifacts and vampire powers
  • Hordes of enemies that include humans, demons and vampires
  • Massive, brutal boss battles
  • Intense, fast-paced FPS combat stands out from the trend of plodding shooters

Indescribably weird, but also amazing

There are a handful of games that for me are insta-buys when they get released here, and super-weird Necrovision is one. I’m cribbing here from a review a wrote a while back, but Necrovision is an ultra strange fps with some very innovative mechanics that makes tonal inconsistency into an art form. A few hours in you’re standing, dual-fisting watercooled machineguns, listening to some crippled squaddie whinge about how he can’t write to his wife because he’s blinded by mustard gas and blah blah, and then you turn your face to the troubled sky and muse aloud about the horrors of war. And then you drop kick a guy off a castle, and yell “eat justice”. It has this (ultra clumsy) melancholic All Quiet on the Western Front ambiance thats wonderfully undermined when you get combo multipliers for stabbing Paul Bäumer with your bayonet before blowing his face off (“Shoot ‘n Stab!” flashes on the screen, and then electricity shoots out of you). Probably the best microcosm of this bipolar personality is that your guy in the game actually has two voices. The one sounds like Patrick Swayze and does this world weary, war-is-hell-but-I-retain-my-sense-of-humor thing, and alternates between variations on “how did it come to this” and cornball one-liners like “wanna dance?”, and the other one sounds like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, and is all one-liners, all the time. So you’ll be wandering through trenches and Patrick Swayze will be waxing poetic about man’s inhumanity to man, and then you’ll blow a dudes legs off with a trenchgun in slow motion, and Dr. Claw yells “Respect my Skillz!” Over the course of this game you will pilot WWI battlemechs, fight flaming stingrays and giant skeletons in wheelchairs, ride a dragon in hell, explore a underground city of vampire mole people, and a ton of other things that independently justify this absurdly low asking price. Come for the hilarious tonal shifts and gonzo story, stay for the proto-Bulletstorm combo/scoring mechanics.

Best worst FPS

My God this game really is so very bad that it really is quite good. For instance: the main character's voice changes for no reason at all. Rigid, linear corridors and tiny boxy levels full of invisible walls. Long loading times even now. Poor performance. Laughable story that makes no sense. Confusing mechanics so that you're never quite sure which gun does what or what mode to use or why you are picking up THAT shiny thing and not the other one (very little is explained to you). But ... the whole thing is at least a long game where you can literally blow people up and the graphics, if not performance, are pretty darn good. In short, the entire thing is embarrassing, silly but still fun.

Worth at least one playtrough

Necrovision (NV) is the spiritual successor to Painkiller (PK). Anyway, it is one of the rare games, that plays (at least in some areas) in the World War I setting. The theme is interesting, but soon the story goes its own way. The best thing are the letters, you can read and find scattered around, so you have some insight about the horror, that the soldiers on the battlefield have been experiencing. And here comes the catch: the whole game is build around a fantasy and horror story, the WWI setting is just a cover. Still, the beginning and some later stages are very interesting in that regard. What is different in NV regards to PK: - they included melee attacks in NV (you need a three button mouse for that) - you can kick (like Duke Nukem and the guy from Bulletstorm) - you can wield two weapons at the same time - in later stages, you can ressurect fallen enemies and use them as your allies - PK was faster, here I had a feeling, like I am slow tank* (the rin is time limited) - *oh, the irony... you have "vechicles": a walking tank and another demonic armor-suite in the last stage - you can fly a dragon - vampire glove - the stages are more interconnected (visually and story-wise) Most of the levels are quite dark and dull, the colors have mostly brown, grey, yellowish tones and red (like the sky in some stages). There are some colors, like the vampire grenade with red smoke, or the green poison gas in WWI trenches and in later stages blue crystals/minerals and machines with blue energy. But that is all. To be fair, it is okay for this setting. I disabled some effects, because for me it was rather distracting. We are speaking of a game, that will soon be a decade old. Sometimes, there can be stutters and low fps. I didn't encounter any bugs. Played on Intel Core i5 6500, 16GB RAM, Geforce GT1030 (performance similar to Geforce GTX750 (not Ti!) and Radeon RX 550), Win 8.1. I could write more, but I will now rather download the prequel - Lost Company. :)

It scratches an Itch

Ok, ill admit i was skeptical going into this game. Never heard of it. on sale for 99 cents. "modern" shooter. It had all of my red flags, but i decided to give it a shot. My first half hour of play filled me with dread, not from the monsters or scary setting, but from it's resemblance to the dime a dozen, AAA tactical shooters. Iron sights, sprint meter, regenerating health, yeah, all of the usual suspects were there. I thought i had found yet another CoD or Battlefield. Then something happened. I slew an armored German in the bunker and picked up a second Maxim machinegun. a SECOND maxim machinegun. It was at this point as i was running down the hallway spraying 7.76 mm hot lead akimbo that i realized that this is how dogs must feel when they ride in cars with thier heads hagging out the window. One boss fight later and here I am giving a five star review to a game ive only played for 45 minutes. yes this game has some jank, and yes i will never be Doom Eternal, but y'kow what? I dont need it to be. Its fun. It's vicseral. It's a video game. And realy, isn't that what we're here for?

A harder less refined Painkiller

A very simple (non tactical) FPS game with heavy influence from late 90s FPS and the later Painkiller fps. If Painkiller is AA game in terms of production values, this is more of a B+. Nothing wrong with that on its own. It's a very violent, simple in terms of mechanics, and very depressing FPS game. Similar to Painkiller. If you enjoyed Painkiller you will definitely not hate this one, you might even like it very much. It is hectic (heh), dark and not the type of game which will cheer you up from atmosphere. Again, very similar to Painkiller. For me it wasn't as good as that game, you will find everything a bit off compared to Painkiller, but if you give it some time you might grow to like it. For the price, if you like non tactical FPS games, it is good value.
