Soulsvania Appetiser

Momodora: RutM is a very solid Metroidvania game which exudes inspiration from both the IGA Castlevania games and the Souls series. It takes approximately 5 hours to beat. TL;DR: If the trailer appeals to you and you've enjoyed games like Symphony of the Night, it's very likely you'll have fun with Momodora, unless you're fatigued with this genre. Gameplay: The kinaesthetics are good; dodge rolls have invincibility frames and the animations for melee attacks have impact. There's that's factor of risk/reward in that enemies hit very hard, but they also have low HP and are easily stun-locked. The player's initial move-set doesn't change much, though there are collectable upgrades which improve weapons (e.g. faster arrow draw speed) and a handful of active items/ spells. The world is laid out like a typical Metroidvania - a series of interconnecting corridors with strategically placed bell towers (which function as save and warp points), divided into areas with their own aesthetic theming. Each area has a variety of combat and platforming challenges, climaxing with a boss battle. Storytelling: NPC dialogue is the main means of plot conveyance. The protagonist is silent, so there are many instances of NPCs essentially repeating what she said ('oh, you're a priestess, huh?'). Though there are some static NPCs, there are enough which move around the world pursuing their own quests over the course of the game, and some instances where they engage in battle. Overall, there's the impression that there's an established world which doesn't simply revolve around the protagonist and which spans beyond what's seen in-game. Replayability: [MINOR SPOILER, MAYBE] There are multiple endings, however the criteria for obtaining them isn't very substantial. However, after beating the game, a 'hard mode' unlocks, which does things like increase the number of enemy placements. There are secrets tucked away, which also increases replay value.

A really good (and grim) experience

If you like gameplay structure similar to metroid/simphony of the night, this game is for you. It has the structure of metroid, but It also has similarities with dark/demon souls. You play the role of Kaho, a priestess that wants to see the queen because of the curse that is spreading through the land. You have a whole map to explore, and you really aren't locked on a linear progression on it. you can complete any area at any time. The "dark souls" aspect of the game, is that you have bells that act as checkpoints (similar to bonfires), and If you ring the bell, your consumables are restocked. the enemies are incredible hard you you try to take a fast approach to them, since a lot of them either hit hard, can use status effects, guard against attacks or even all of them at the same time. The story is told from the perspective of the side characters that you encounter during the journey, since Kaho is a silent protagonist. both of them and the enviroment tells that this game isn't really all sweet. Overall, this is one incredible game, that everyone should be playing. PS: try inputting the konami code during gameplay to see what happens =3

Great Platformer

Gameplay was great. It is reminiscent of many action-platformers, but also stands on its own merits. You start off with a basic set of moves. You expand these moves as the game progresses. Your abilities consist of: moves consist of a basic attack (that is also used as a combo), a single and double jump, a roll/dodge and a ranged bow attack. The bow may be charged to release a 3-arrow shot. Later, there are power ups that add to these abilities. I say add-to, because the original moves remain the same. There are some items in the game - broken down into passive and active slots. The passive items grant a modifier to your character. These modifiers range from combat oriented to exploration oriented. Combat is your typical action-platformer style - enemies take a fixed number of hits. Your character has a health bar to track your character’s remaining health. Enemies will drop the game’s currency when defeated. There are no experience points gained in the game. Your character becomes stronger by collecting a fixed set of health power ups. Bosses drop something special if you manage to defeat them without taking a hit. Speaking of boss fights, they are all interesting and unique. My particular favorites are the battles where more than one character is involved on either side (yours or the enemies). As an aside, I only played this with a 360 controller and thought the experience was great. I can’t comment on other control styles. Sound and music were quite good as well. Some of the enemies help indicate their attack by sound. Each area has a soundtrack that contributes to its ambiance. One of my favorite tracks occurs in the monastery area. The OST is usually one of my favorite parts of a game - the developer did a great job at making this one. The graphics are fantastic. This is an example of how a pixel-art game should look. The characters are well-animated. The environments employ a depth of layers and motion - as well as some nice “frilly” effects. For example, grass will wave as you pass by. There are also some interesting uses of water reflections. There is one room in particular, not too far after the first boss, where your character and the enemies are reflected in the water. It threw me off the first time I encountered it. Story-wise the game is also good. The story is revealed through tidbits from the NPCs throughout the game. There are a couple of sad threads. I am not sure if your choices of progress have an impact on how these threads turn out. There are at least two separate endings that I have discovered as well. Overall, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is a great game that is worthy of play. I completed the game in about 5 hours of play. I can’t come up with much criticism, but a lot of praise for it.

Excellent game, worth the time and money

Just finished the game. It has a great art style, great music, good sound overall. The platforming is good, combat is fairly tight especially later game as you get more items / abilities. There are enough items that you can customize your playstyle pretty well. There are lots of little secrets and nice little touches in the game. I got about 50% in my first playthrough. There are also a good number of puzzles I didn't figure out with NPCs... It is very high quality overall. There is some backtracking which can be annoying at times but overall, not a big deal. As you get better you can traverse pretty quickly. Some boss fights I had a little trouble reading the "tells" though it could be I just didn't get the hang of it. Keyboard controls are okay, controller isn't bad either. They get the job done. I played with both. The game took me about 6-7 hours to beat. I think to 100% it, without a guide, it'd probably take me another 2-3 just to back track. Though, I think there is additional content on subsequent playthroughs. I played through on hard my first go. I'd try replying it again, so perhaps a total of 15 hours to get everything. I'd say no more than 20. Maybe. The game overall was absolutely worth my time and I highly recommend it. The game is worth full price, no questions asked. It is a high quaility, platformer-metrovania-dark souls esque- game. I love it!

A Good (but not Great) game

A nice little title with a decent difficulty curve. While it doesn't join the ranks of the best of the genre (see Hollow Knight), it is certainly worth your time if you love Castlevania types (SotN). Combat is good. It's a little clunky, but not badly enough that you'll be frustrated at it. Dodging/rolling is skillfully is required to defeat the bosses, and knowing when to attack, and when to retreat. Attacking roots you for a moment (which feels outdated), and some bosses can be cheesed using ranged spam. The upgrade system (passive charms and active items) could have been more interesting, but function well enough. Level design is mostly good. Nice platforming, interesting enemy placement. Decent secret exploration. The devs did a good job including world building (NPCs you can talk to, and interesting environments which tell the story). Artistically the game excels. It goes for an anime-ish art direction (Sailor Moon), and pulls it off well. I thought the game would be more fan-servicey (main character with short skirt and high red stockings, and the witch of decay with you attacking her boobs more or less), but it really doesn't devolve into tastelessness (I do like some fan service in my games, just not when it's totally shameless. This game definitely could have even used more, but it's fine the way it is). Music is ultimately forgettable. When there is some sort of melody, it's not good. When it's going for atmosphere, it really does well (heavy bass, sense of dread type stuff). Overall, this game is worth your time if you are a fan of this type of game. I enjoyed it and 100%'d the map -- definitely don't regret playing it. However, it falls in the middle of the pack, so if you're on a budget, look at some of the other ones first -- but do eventually come back to this one.
