Metal Wolf Chaos is FromSoftware's attempt to push the sales of the original Xbox in Japan 15 years ago and has before this release been exclusive to Xbox in Japan and thus extremely collectible. The XD version is a quite straightforward port of the Xbox game from 2004. The game supports higher resolutions up to at least 4K and wide screen display formats but that's about it. Unfortunately the FPS is capped to 30 and the textures are still quite low res by modern standards. At least the game runs great on almost any PC. The controls take a bit getting used to. I use a Xbox One controller. All this doesn't mean the game isn't fun. The plot is absolutely insane and so over the top you can't help but laugh at the absurd dialogue and crazy events happening all around you. Metal Wolf Chaos feels almost like classic EDF but even more tongue in cheek. Huge explosions, mechs and over the top action is simply old fashioned gaming in a good way and not seen enough in games outside maybe the EDF series. Metal Wolf Chaos XD has it's flaws but is quite unique and made even more interesting by the fact it's made by FromSoftware. A piece of gaming history that couldn't be replicated in 2019's environment. If the port had been techinically more impressive I'd given it 5 stars.
