Subpar PC Port

I praise GOG for bringing this game to modern PC's, but this version of the game is very mediocre. It's based on a pretty bad port from 2000 and it shows, it lacks in many qol improvements. Only play this version if you have no other option available.

Shabby, barebones port

A disappointing port of a great game. The main issue for me is the control scheme, which is shockingly clumsy and frustratingly limited. Just maneuvering out of the first cargo dock area was incredibly difficult, and that's not even attempting CQC or firing a weapon. An extremely patient and forgiving person might be able to slog through it, but I can't imagine playing the full game this way. If you've played MGS on a console and are looking to revisit it on PC, let me assure you that this does not live up to the original experience. If you've never played MGS before, I'd hate to think that this is how someone might experience one of the best games ever for the first time. Even on deep discount I'd be hesitant to recommend this to anyone. Thankfully I'm only out a few bucks for my trouble, but rather than force myself to endure this, I'm just going to hang tight for the rumored PS5 / PC remake.

Kept you Waiting huh ?

Overall Metal Gear Solid is a great game. To say it is awesome to have it available on a platform besides PlayStation 1, PSP and PS Vita is an understatement. But you are in for a little work to get this one to play properly. This game is pretty much a bare bones port of the original PC port from 2000. So that means you will get a lot of issues you might have had back then. Not the greatest port to say the least but we do have the luxury of 20 years worth of fan fixes. Right off the bat the game does not detect modern controllers. I found a quick and dirty way to get in and play is to get a keyboard controller remapping application. It essentially allows you to assign keyboard keys to a controller. There are some that even support ps4 controllers if you want to get that authentic PlayStation experience. Keep in mind if you run the game in GPU mode you receive minimal texture filtering geometry clipping and texture warping fixes however fonts and sprites look hazy and blurry. There are also oddities on the way it reproduces certain effects. Not to mention there is also a noticeable tinniness to the spoken dialogue track. I found running it in software mode alleviates a lot of the issues from GPU mode but you only have one resolution available, the games original. So if large pixely looking graphics don't bug you Metal Gear Solid runs pretty much like the PS1 in software mode minus an effect or two. Metal Gear Solid PC barebones without mods of some sort does not do the game and play experience justice. It is unfortunate the state of this port but that was public knowledge at this point. So yeah I strongly suggest you do some research into fan mods for this game. It will make a mediocre play experience into a truly great one.

Great port but controls are very clunky

I have this game on my ps vita as well as the original game for ps1 and now on pc, I totally recommend this game however the controls for pc (even with an xbox controller and ps4 controller) you will have a lot of problems when encountering a boss fight. For example on the last boss fight with Liquid (fist fight) sometimes punch and kick action wont be executed correctly sometimes instead of punch, punch, kick it will only do a punch and Snake will pause for a moment or sometimes when using the analog sticks instead of the character moving it will go through first person mode. It sometimes gets very frustrating. I didnt have these problems with the ps vita port or with the original game, I guess the game was never meant to be played on other systems so obviously you will encounter optimization problems.
