Get Over it

If you consider yourself an aficionado of strategy games and you enjoy a 4X setting then Master of Orion 3 (MOO3) probably deserves a shot. While it is not unusual for fans of previous versions of games to be less than pleased when their passionate favorite gets a complete overhaul, the rhetoric spewed out by the old school diehards of this series went way over the top. If you got into strategy gaming after MOO3 you might do yourself a disservice by paying much attention to any of the one star reviews or commentaries that begin by telling you how much a player was disappointed MOO3 wasn’t just a small tweak with some updated graphics of MOO1 & 2 while retaining the feel of their old sweetheart. Again, I am speaking only to the true fans of strategy games that know each game must stand on its own merit. And that a games true value lies first in the strategic challenge it presents followed closely by replayability (or how long it stays on your hard drive). So many games have been done a disservice by being held up to a mirrored image of their ancestors and having every change or tweak being derailed as a flaw or unforgivable alteration of the original. On-line services like GOG allow new players of classic games to break with convention and for a very reasonable price, play the games in reverse order. That may very well be the best advice for strategy gamers approaching the MOO series for the first time. Start with MOO3 then go on to MOO2 and MOO1. The odds are very good you will not share the opinions of the tainted old timers who only saw MOO3 through MOO2 colored glasses. In fact going from MOO3 to MOO2 might seem a bit like going from chess to checkers.

Simply Abysmal

The creators - and those that still stubbornly cling to this wreck with mods and all - have forgotten that gaming is about playing a GAME...not an uber-realistic universal empire simulator. Grown-ups like me who have jobs, family and a wife don't have time for such nonsense. We want a game that we can sit down and ply over an hour a day and despite the fact that MOO1 & 2 were great GAMES, this one is not. It is not a game. It is a spreadsheet. Stay away from this one. Stay far far far away. You have been warned!!!

Dissapointingly Awful

I'd decided to purchase this game despite the bad reviews since I had enjoyed Master of Orion 2. Bad Idea. The game focuses too much on it's hundreds of checkboxes, options, and tabs, taking most of the fun out of the gameplay. If you don't want to micro manage every single aspect of the game you can instead turn on AI to control aspects such as production. The problem with this is that the ai will usually not do what you would normally choose to do and may not act according to your chosen strategy. This also detriments gameplay in other ways since you wouldn't control production. Imagine commanding whatever fleets the AI decides to spit out. Not always a very good strategy and honestly quite annoying, especially when the AI decides to build a somewhat useless ship for no apparent reason. Unlike the previous MOO games, you cannot choose your research directly, again limitng your strategy. The game also requires so much micro management and attention to diplomatic events, that the pace of the game is unbearably slow. For example, I'd only managed to make it to turn 50 after over 2 hours into a round. The game literally can give you over a dozen messages and notifications every time you hit the "turn" button. Basically the game gives you little choice in what to do unless you manage every tiny detail. Even then your choices can be limited. Every aspect of the game interface is a pain, there are so many radio boxes and options that need to be attended to every turn that the game just isn't fun. You will be too busy micromanaging to actually play or even move forward. Get one of the newer Galactic Civilizations games or Master of Orion 2 instead. Much better control, yet more fluid gameplay in terms of management.

A travesty

This game is the epitome of the phrase "Where did it all go wrong?" It's as if the game designers completely abandoned MOO 1+2 and decided to make a game in about three weeks. That's what the overall quality feels like. It's pointless, frustrating and completely disappointing.

Well worth it, just takes time.

I've been a MOO fan since the first game. When MOO3 first came out it seemed too much and too difficult. So it sat on the shelf for a year or two. I then sat down and started playing it, letting some things be automated and then the game became awesome. There is so much detail in the game, so I recommend not getting bogged down in the details (unless that is your thing).
