One of the Best

There were just a few games which have stayed with me through the years as true classics. Amongst them: Betrayal at Krondor, Master of Orion 1 and 2, and Master of Magic. It's as if GOG heard my prayers. These are games, which current gamers at least need to appreciate as anticedents of the current crop of games. But what made these games special wasn't cutting edge graphics: it was the thought and care necessary to craft a decent game. Just take a look at the strategy guides for these games and compare them to the current guides. These have tables, charts, odds, in depth analysis of the game and gameplay. They were, as the name suggests guides. Now they are nothing more than glorified walkthroughs with pictures, because the games themselves are only hollow empty shells of games like this (with some exceptions of course). So, thank you GOG for bringing these back, and thanks to all of you for appreciating true classic games and spreading the word!

If only they still made games like this

This is one of my most awaited games since I joined GoG, as it has been for others. For me it took the game Civilization to a whole new level. Civilization seemed like a big game with so many different units, but this game really blew my mind. The reason being: Two mirror worlds to conquer. You have to travel between these using abilities of heroes, spells or traveling through towers linking these two worlds. One is similar to Earth the other of a more magical nature. Makes the game feel like it has a bit of the 3D tic tac toe about it, since the players can have cities on both planes and need these towers or spells to travel between them. Even more so is the spells. There are more than 200 spells. At least there are 6 types of magic, and Chaos alone has 40 spells. There is several kinds of spells as well. Some for summoning units, giving bonuses to units or cities, giving damage, even terraforming. Like raise a volcano next to an enemy city and watch its population drop and less resources to get. Since there are several races, I am guessing more than 100 different units as well. As well as several different heroes that can wield items, and you can even create your own magical items with spells. All of this being new concepts in strategy games. The combat system, where you have city walls, use magic, and use unit and hero abilities. The combat system in Civilization was automatic and boring compared to this. However there still is the option just to press auto for the combat.

Countless hours wasted on this game...

This game will suck your time away if you take an hour or so to learn its intricacies. It is, at heart, a civ clone... but so much more! If civ had a fantasy branch, this would be it. The addition of complex and interesting magic, a multi-level world and compelling and diverse starting characters makes this game worth every bit of the little cost here. This game ranks with the original Railroad Tycoon in addictiveness and fun for me. Turn based strategy gamers? Don't miss it!

2nd best game ever

After 30 years of playing games this is still my number 2 (Number one being Alpha Centauri). It basically uses a Civilization based worldmap with city building and development combined with tactical battles with units combined with magic spells cast by your or your heroes. Doesn't sound that special until you play it. The replay value of this game is almost infinite due to different races and strategies. The various magic school powers interact in very interesting ways and after the 1.3.1 patch the AI is murderous. There are also 2 planes on the world which make things even more interesting. Gameplay stars out with simple battles but as the game progresses and you gain more magic power it becomes more and more important until you start casting things like Eternal Darkness combined with Zombie Mastery over the entire world and unleash your undead legions for example. Or will you specialize in creating creating artifact weapons and armor and summon the legendary Thorin, warrior of light, to crush your enemies ? The heroes you might enlist also start fairly basic but become engines of destruction toward the endgame. The possibilities are endless. One of the rare strategy games where even in the endgame things stay exciting and I or the AI managed to turn the game around on occasion. I cannot recommend this game enough.

MASTERPIECE

A beautiful mix of CIV + MOO + D&D blended to perfection. As others said nothing needs changing, a remake of the exact same game with modern graphics but NOT changing the isometric perspective or anything else would be a godsend.
