Caster of Magic, the enhanced edition of the original Master of Magic, is a work of love.

It was built by the community to improve on a strategy classic. Now it's brought a step further with Caster of Magic for Windows.

It is an upgraded edition of a classic which allows you to run it natively on Windows for the first time, as well as supporting higher screen resolutions.

It also contains countless improvements for Caster of Magic, including new spells, game options, UI and AI improvements. It is the ultimate edition of Master of Magic, brought by the fans to the modern era.

Caster of Magic started out as a mod, championed by Seravy and building on top of the already popular community patch. Should be free for who owns caster magic

As per title. I already bought this expansion/conversion DLC, and now they ask for me to buy it again for the windows support? This is not something i appreciate.

A complete upgrade over Master of Magic

This is more of a remake of Master of Magic than a mod. Among the changes: 14 wizards, options for truly massive worlds, new wizard powers, new spells, building queues in towns, new AI, new ruin mechanics, new treasures... I'm rather disappointed in Slitherine for selling it as if it were a mod and requiring a purchase of Master of Magic, because it is, in fact, a stand-alone game built from scratch. I thought Slitherine was a pro-gamer company but... apparently not. Their launcher is also absolutely awful. Slitherine's sins aside, I'm really impressed with all the changes and enjoying the game so far. Yay for rebirths of favorite old games!

I really wanted to love this game

I really wanted to love this, but I find I'm put off by too many of the changes. There's no way to maximize the game on a widescreen monitor without the whole game getting stretched horizontally. The graphics for terrain are all worse, for some reason that I can't fathom. Even if you select the option to display mountains the old way, they're still uglier than they were in the original. The building tree is bloated with a bunch of extra buildings, but none of them make the game more interesting for me. The opponent wizards' AI is aggressive to the point of being obnoxious (a Wizard Pact as a deal where the player agrees to stay clear of the AI's cities, and the AI agrees to leave armies right beside all the player's cities). The 'Quit' button is gone, so you now have to Alt+F4 out of the game, by design. Locking high-tier buildings behind a spell that you have to research and cast... feels like it misses the point of the design esthetic of the original game (you're a wizard gaining power, it's not Civ where you're researching new techs to build better units & cities). Overall, the game suffers from a lot of things that have been redesigned, but not improved. Multiple screens have had their appearance completely redone, and in most cases they just look a little bit sloppier than they had originally. There are also plenty of positive improvements. Giving more units 2 base movement was a good change. Starting heroes out more powerful was good. The beginning of the game feels more lively, for sure, and the list of options when you're starting a new game is impressive. I'm not giving up on it yet, but I certainly won't be getting the sort of longevity out of this game that I did out of the original.

A little good and a lot of bad.

It's not the original, that's for sure, which is most obviously apparent in the one area where they shouldn't have changed anything: the graphics. I'm unsure why the overworld terrain was redrawn, it looks much worse than the original game (yes, even with the use original mountains option it doesn't help). Battle maps tend to be a visual mess, especially in a forest or mountains and the unit selection indicator behaves strangely. There are often times where it's difficult to target an enemy unit because the individual figures appear to be in a different square. The provided solution is "turn the grid on everywhere" which makes it look even worse. I understand the ability to have more than 4 opponents meant the old menus wouldn't be feasible but the two replacement menus are visually unappealing at best and in the late game the Wizards screen becomes a cluttered mess despite only maybe half of them making it to mid to late game. Oh the opponents will just quit or be conquered by the incessantly rampaging monsters or their populace will just outright revolt. It's kind of silly. Cities don't work quite the same as they used to, you have to research and cast a spell to get access to higher tier buildings (not a great idea) and the queue system can be very irritating if you want to have a town that constantly generates units for your army (you have to manually enqueue individual units, if there's a box to tick to fix this I haven't found it). But the big change that irks me is you no longer have the option to just raze a city after conquering it. Instead you have to select it and wait for the city to abandon which greatly slows war progress. There is some rebalancing with units and spells which is a mixed bag. Item creation is much better but still a minor thing. All that said ultimately this feels like a beta or early access. There are a lot of improvements and tweaks that need to be made but you'll get some fun out of it if you liked the original.

Master of Magic with new great features

I love some features in this remake such as an ability to play on larger maps, with more wizards, some custom rules, etc. However, I don't understand why mountains and node art got changed. I liked the old art a lot better. I will give it 5 stars once the bugs are fixed. Currently the biggest one is when you have sorcery books, when you try to craft an item, instead of sorcery item spell effects like flight, magic immunity and invisibility, it gives you nature ones like elemental armor instead. Please fix!
