Great little game with a big heart

It's a wonderful world they've created here, with art, music and animations all contributing. I enjoyed the puzzles and games within the game. I'm not sure exactly why but somehow I found more satisfaction in working out each one than with other games. Well, some of the puzzle sequences end with making another robot person happy :) Maybe the rest was a tendency towards "Ah, that's it" without a lot of fanfare or distraction. Overall, it's a less is more situation. Your wee guy has a tendency to throw away items when they've done what's needed so inventory isn't cluttered and there aren't a million things to try. But sometimes the right thing to do is hidden, even though it's right in front of you. It's a short story rather than a novel. But like the best short stories it gives enough back story to fill it out and draw you in. I'm hooked.

The extras make it more than worth it.

Good for a relaxing rainy afternoon or snowy day. Great artwork and music. Thanks to the power of the internet can cheese through this or spend time trying to solve the puzzles.

Wonderful & heartwarming

I was recommended this game by a friend and ended up streaming it, which was very fortunate because people were more than happy to assist with some the puzzles I got stuck on. (After laughing at me for a while first, of course). From the very first scene I was enamored with the character and the fact that the game comes full circle made the playthrough all the more worthwhile. The puzzles are clever and honestly after playing puzzle games all my life it's shocking it took me as long as it did and that I needed help. There is no pointless puzzle. The game gives you exactly what you need to solve each puzzle, without any cluttering. It's brilliantly done. The only negative? The band you get back together and can listen to jam for a while, their song doesn't seem to be on the soundtrack?! :-(

A modern point n click classic

Machinarium is a cool-looking point n click adventure, by the devs that made the Samarost games. You play as a robot aiming to figure out why he got exiled out of the city. You meet bad guys, good guys and everything in the between on your journey. The gameplay is pretty standard with various puzzles, item hunting and even some mini games (some harders than others!). While some item puzzles can be tricky or not make too much sense, they are usually straight forward and there aren't really any dead ends. The art design is very unique, and different from the Samorost series, this looks more like a family friendly version of HH Geiger's artwork. The soundtrack is pretty good and fits in where it should. This game continues the Amanita tradition of not having any voice acting, instead telling things through the environment, odd sounds and speak bubbles with drawn objects in them. I definitely recommend this as a point n click game for both fans of the genre and beginners. I'm honestly surprised this game never got a sequel, but I'm excited to play more titles from the developers' catalogue of games!

Beautiful classic

Machinarium is surely a classic of the genre by now, a scruffy hand-crafted masterpiece - which I've only just got round to completing. It's a highly imaginative game, relying on beautiful, atmospheric artwork and environmental storytelling to tell its simple, dialogue-less story. The art really is fantastic, a world of messy, organic metal towers, cute dented little robots and shady back streets and plazas. One the best looking games I've played. The puzzles are a mix of traditional adventure puzzles, minigames and logic puzzles. I personally have very little patience with logic puzzles, and the lack of dialogue means it's sometimes a bit obscure as to what to do next, but there's an in-built guide that just requires you to complete a mini game to unlock the answers to a puzzle (a clever solution). The soundtrack is gorgeous and the little scrap metal robots have enough personality to make parts of the game really moving. It's a modern(ish) classic, if you like this sort of game at all then it should be on your shelf.
