Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded

This is the first time I've ever played anything in the Leisure Suit Larry series, and I've got to say I wasn't sure what to expect. The constant, and irritating, mention of Larry's foul breath pretty much ruined whatever goodwill I had for it. Thankfully I used a walkthrough (knowing as I do, the adventure game fondness for ridiculous logic leaps in puzzles), so for the most part it didn't overstay its welcome. But, basically the game leads you through pointless encounters that go nowhere until the last one, which goes well for basically no reason. The keys to a certain door won't appear until you buy an apple (an apple which isn't relevant until the end of the game), the same for a helium canister. The rather disgusting encounter with a cat didn't earn any points in the game's favor either. Irritatingly, after your first "encounter" with a woman, the game leaves you with $5, and you have to build it all up again at the casino. I don't know about you, but the amount of blackjack/blackjack like games used in video games just doesn't endear me to ANOTHER make X number game, whether it's blackjack or pazaak. The backgrounds are fun and colorful, but the stilted animation of the characters falls flat. They don't feel like they belong in the backgrounds. For my part, I found LSL: Reloaded tedious and uninteresting. I may give the others a try at a later date, but it'll be a while. I'd rather go replay King's Quest or the Blackwell games, which are of much higher quality. The worst sin, I think, is that I didn't laugh once. Where was the much vaunted wit? Nowhere, as far as I could tell.

Das bis dato das letzte wahre Game aus der Serie. Auch die Nachfolger von "Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded" sind nicht zu verachten, aber der Zeichenstil kommt nicht an diesen Larry ran. Liebevoll designtes Game mit kniffligen Aufgaben und lustiger Story. Eine Empfehlung für jeden Fan.

Contentwise this game can's compete with modern adventures, it is way shorter and simpler. You must be aware of that. But the remake is very well done and stays true to the original. The controls are good, the graphics resemble the LSL7 style, the humor is ... well ... Larryish, unlike in the latest new games by CrazyBunch The rerecorded and extended soundtrack by Austin Wintory is also worth a 'look'. Check it out on Bandcamp

This is a Kickstarter funded remake of the classic Sierra adventure game, Leisure Suit Larry 1. If you know what that's like, you know what you're getting. If you don't, the premise is that you're a clueless computer programmer looking to lose his virginity in ersatz Las Vegas. The game is driven by not-really-logical inventory and action puzzles, and there's many great error messages when you try to do something that won't result in you advancing the plot. The art is based on the codified versions of the LSL world that the series would develop much later on in its lifespan, that weren't around in the original incarnations of the games. The voice acting is superb, mostly. The characters are pretty good updates, but too much attention was given to the Kickstarter backers, and their personal vanity characters really detract from the game. This kind of thing was seen in a number of the 2014 era Kickstarter games, so it is what it is. There's plenty of cheap deaths, and save scumming is still a requirement for the mandatory casino aspects of the game. Not much has been done to change the structure of the game except for a new scenario around the mid point that's just there for padding out the runtime. Al Lowe's classic off-color humor is found throughout and this is probably Reloaded's biggest strength, however... the drama surrounding this game and the people who made it is really sad. Basically, this game was the game that made Al Lowe swear off game development forever. I can't really blame him. It ended up affecting a number of old school Sierra devs for asinine reasons as well. This seriously taints my enjoyment of the game, and I don't think I'll ever play it again because of that. On it's own merits, this game probably falls in the better half of the LSL family of games, but doesn't even remotely aspire to the operatic heights of LSL7. The game is a 3/5 on its own accord but I'm unsure what to make of it otherwise and I won't ever be revisiting it.
