Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2

Playing with gamepad and hi-res mod game is still fun after all those years.

While not a bad game by any means, Blood Omen 2 has large boots to fill and often falls short of the mark. I highly suggest downloading and installing the Conceptial Edition mod from ModDB as it does improve the stability and graphical quality of the game.

The fact that this game remains the worse in the Legacy of Kain series is a testament to the games themselves. Although it pales in comparison to Soul Reaver and the original Blood Omen, it is still a fun, challenging game. Though the story in this game is debatable on whether or not it can be considered completely canon, it's still interesting enough to keep you engaged throughout most of it. The block puzzles can feel a bit monotonous at times and the combat is a wee bit clunky, but the atmosphere is very powerful and one of the main reasons why I keep coming back to this one in the series- it captured a unique steampunky gothic atmosphere which I can only relate to in the Theif series. Gog just needs to get the original game (why haven't they released Blood Omen 1 yet!?!?) and then the collection of one of the best stories told in a game will be complete!

Legacy of Kain is, although aged, a very good series - and even as the black sheep of the whole Blood Omen 2 is a decent game. I've played through the original a half dozen times, at least. And yet, this "port" of the game is completely unplayable on any kind of modern hardware. The menus are glitchy, the controls are bad (and cannot be re-bound) and even the game itself stutters, rewinds physics and crashes constantly. To be honest, I expected better from GOG than this. If you happen to have an old computer, you can probably get around some of these problems; and it is only to those people with ancient Windows Vista machines that I could recommend this version. A sad day indeed, that such an awesome series as Legacy of Kain must be reduced to this.

Hier, im zweiten Teil von Blood Omen aus dem Jahr 2002 wird nun die Geschichte erzählt, wie Kain an die Spitze des Landes Nosgoth gelangt ist. Dieses gesamte Setting hat was, hier sind Vampire noch mächtig und böse und müssen sich vor Wasser und Sonnenlicht in Acht nehmen (nicht, dass man noch zu glitzern anfängt). Klar merkt man der Grafik an, dass sie schon 20 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat, aber darüber sieht man recht schnell hinweg. Die Stimmung wird schön transportiert und durch Musik und Sound passend unterstützt. Bei der Steuerung merkt man, dass zu dieser Zeit scheinbar noch gerne auf Maus verzichtet wurde, so kann man alles auch nur per Tastatur steuern (das geht nach meinem Geschmack sogar besser). Wenn man die Tastatur und Maus verwenden möchte, sollte man etwas Zeit in die Konfiguration der Steuerung legen, damit man sich die Finger nicht verknotet. Ansonsten knobeln und kämpfen wir uns durch dunkle Gassen und besiegen (hoffentlich) die Bedrohung, die alle Vampire auslöschen möchte. Auf dem Weg zum Ziel trinken wir natürlich gerne auch mal einen Schluck Blut. Hat man sich an die Steuerung gewöhnt, ein feines Spiel, was gut unterhält und Spaß macht.
