And The Dead were made flesh and dwelt among us. In flesh ripped and pocketed in running sores and the terror of our age our bodies cannot staunch the flow of darkness nor stem the tides of death. We are food but not for long.
There is enough fire power stacked here to blow them soulless husks to hell and back; and we are giving it them all. The towns and cities are burning and the end's a long time coming. Enjoy it while you can.
• Full 3D Environment with full 360 degree rotational view.
• Mission based scenarios for full immerse play.
• Massive numbers of enemies at any one time.
• Controversial horror setting.
• Gory hack and slash first person action.
• Incredible Painted backdrops.
Due to the age of the title, it currently does not support network multiplayer.
This game is NOT perfect, the AI is dumb as hell, the engine is outdated (and was even then), the resolution is terrible comparative to other games. What it does have going for it though? It's pure fun. Think of it as DOOM mixed with Metal Slug, the graphics definitely give that vibe, it plays well for what it is, and it's an absolute blast to play through; arcade style games like this one have a story, but the main point is "shoot em 'till they're dead", and man does it do that really well!
It has nicely animated sprites, immersive strafe tilting and head bobbing. The guns are satisfying to shoot. The enemies are cannon fodder zombies that are satisfying to mow down. You have AI teammates that follow you around and help you shoot the hordes of zombies. The sound effects are nice. The guns sound like they have some punch. Honestly, I read the one star review , but then after I watched some gameplay video I instantly bought it.
The options menu doesn't show you all the controls. You have to hit F5 to change the mouse look from inverted. It was an overlooked FPS from a time in the 90's when everyone was going 3D. It didn't have a memorable player character with personality like the 3D Realms games and the graphics are pretty dark and not very colorful. It's fun cheap retro underdog FPS fun.
Ocean is not known for making great games, but this game flirts with greatness. In fact I'd say it's very good. Released when sprite-based FPS games were out of fashion, Last Rites looks archaic when stacked against it's late 90s contemporaries, but it does some novel things for the time.
Its not just you against waves of zombies, you also get squad-mates. The gameplay isn't just "Find the key, find the exit!" You need to achieve objectives and then return to the drop zone. Your mission is spelled out for you via between-level briefing screens, which feature some nice artwork. The gameplay itself is very satisfying. My main gripe is the lack of a proper map. This was 1997 after all.
Last rites is a semi-forgotten 90's fps about shooting zombies.
It's also semi-interesting and semi-enjoyable for several reasons:
the good:
- amazing atmosphere. Reminds me of 80's horror movies (Carpenter meets Romero).
- you really feel like you're in a 100% corrupted, 100% opposing place. The feeling of being "in the wrong place at the wrong time" on the empty nighttime streets overrun by zombies really gets under one's skin.
- The places you visit kinda-sorta resemble real places.
- The graphics aren't bad, the animations have personality.
- The mission briefing artworks looks amazing.
- The music is fittingly dark, minimal and electronic.
- the controls are tight, and mouselook as we know it know is fully supported. Remember, this was only about half a year after quake came out.
- you have a bunch of allies with you who try their best shooting all the zombies around.
Now the bad:
- Gameplay is basic. You do have objectives, but it's mostly shooting the same foes, trying buttons and getting lost.
- You really feel like a rat in a maze. It's very easy to get lost. There's no map (only what you find on a wall), just a radar. At best it gets boring really fast, at worst you'll get turned around and never find your way again.
- The places you visit look insanely samey, grey and indistinct. Everything kind of resemble a concrete warehouse.
- though the foes and friends are nicely drawn, the resolution doesn't help, and they tend to look and feel kinda similar.
- mission briefings are just plain text over a pic.
- the music will get on your nerves while being lost.
- while it's relatively easy to get around and shoot, jumping is a little sticky, and opening new paths can be a problem as most of the times you barely see what you interact with.
- your allies are a suicide-militia. They'll run headfirst into action and get killed. You'll get no penalty for that, thank god.
I do have a soft-spot for this, mainly for the mood, otherwise it is rightfully forgotten.
This game has some very weird design choices that have made it age pretty poorly, namely the fact that your minimap uses a battery that can run out, for some reason?? But overall the game is pretty good, there are tons of enemies in each level, like probably hundreds, which is nice. I also appreciate how all of the enemies aren't hitscan but instead throw axes and stuff that the player can pretty easily dodge. The level design can be a bit confusing at times, especially because of how dark the levels can be and how your flashlight also has a battery for some mysitifying reason, but it was never like shadow warrior bad, you'll generally be able to learn the layout of the level or at least not get too lost.
