Not for Everyone

For about every cool and interesting aspect Killer is Dead has, it's got another that feels undercooked or not quite planned out. Story isn't straightforward but it doesn't answer every question it raises. Combat can have its moments in its simplicity, but it doesn't really start feeling better until you've invested in upgrades. Unlocking subweapons makes some enemies more trivial to deal with, but they're locked behind the Gigolo missions, which they themselves are divisive depending on who you ask. So why play it? Well, it's kinda crazy, especially the boss fights; they're definitely this game's high points and their levels fit their respective characters pretty well. Music is pretty moody and atmospheric too, with a couple standouts. Overall, it's definitely got the Grasshopper charm, which can ultimately be the deciding factor on investing time and money in it over other games. Dual audio is a nice feature too. The end package can be best described as "it either clicks with you or it doesn't". If you have reservations, it's probably best at a discount. Otherwise, you're better off playing other 3D beat-em-ups that carry less jank and have more than their charm to offer. PSA: The Nightmare Edition (the PC port) has a couple of annoyances: capped at 30fps, third boss crashes the game on dual-core CPUs, Japanese voice option excludes in-game sounds, etc. Fixes for these issues you can read up here. https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Killer_Is_Dead

Good, definitely not great

First of all, let me get this out of the way: it's all down to opinion, so do take this "review" with a grain of salt. I'm not the biggest Goichi Suda/Grasshopper fan, especially not to the point of collecting his/their Japanese-only games, or the ones released on consoles I never owned. Having said this, killer7 is one of the best video game experiences I've ever had, and going from there I played other Suda 51 games I ended up loving straight away. Other people have talked about the technical side of things when it comes to Killer Is Dead, so I don't think there's much I can add to what they've already said. This Nightmare Edition addresses some control and gameplay issues the original edition(s) had, but the game itself is still pretty shallow. I could have titled this review "Not for everyone", but at this point in time, and considering the vast majority of GOG's consumer base, I don't think we need to keep saying that over and over again. No game is for everyone. If this game looks appealing to you in any shape or form, though, don't get discouraged by the middling reviews you might find: it's a good game within the genre, and the fact it has that distinctive quirkiness and style you can expect from Grasshopper is a bonus. The gameplay can be as simple or as invested as you want, if you find the base combat boring, invest in upgrades and the game becomes way more complex. If you don't care about any of that, and just want to let some steam off while enjoying an "out-there" story with dark, cynical, strange characters, you can definitely play the game that way. Also: the boss fights are some of the most interesting I've experienced in a game.It's far from being the best title Grasshopper Manufacture has developed, but is defnitely worth a go if it looks mildly interesting to you. *At this launch discount price, especially, I'd definitely nab it.* Hopefully if KID sells well enough, Grasshopper considers releasing killer7 on GOG, too, so there's also that.

Soft Boiled Eggs

You are Mondo. Suit and tie wearing hacky slashy spectacle fighter assassin in the Suda51 Killverse. As a vampire*?, you use blood for ammo to use your sub weapons (Shoot, drill, etc), heal, and perform instakill execution moves on weaker enemies, and to finish stronger ones. I dunno, he uses blood like it's thaumaturgy magic. He has red eyes. He's a vampire. Then there's this optional Yakuza-esque dating minigame, where you shower ladies in (very expensive) gifts, and if you do it right, you are rewarded with a new subweapon. Soft boiled eggs? Think this is the first I've heard of them. Apparently it's an inbetween of a hard boiled egg, and a sunny side up-fried egg... or something. Definitely one of the weaker Suda51 games, but still worth playing. It clocks in at about 6 hours if you just focus on the main missions, it also has a bunch of side missions. Mondo has the last name of Zappa. Wonder if he's related to the blacksmith from Chrono Cross.

Great Game; FUN.

This game was awesome! I will be buying this solely to support the devs, this game is both wacky, fun, and certainly anime-ish. The story mode length is OK, wished there was more development on the characters. The game play has lots of variety; has "dating sims" hack and slash, even some driving, though not that great, but is still an amazing game. The soundtrack is cool too, and even after you complete the game it has some things for you to do so... yeah get it! at the time of me writing this is 3.79 USD.

Creative Game

When I played this I had a very unique experience. The gameplay is pretty enternaining. I really like the art-style. The charecters are interesting and I really like the setup. My main complaint I had with the game is with it's story, as I mentioned the games concept, world building and charecters are pretty great. Which is why I would've gave the game a much higher score if the charecters had more time to develop. What I mean is like this example. it felt like the story was setup to be a 500 page book, but it had to be cut to 150 pages in the last minute to be published. The gameplay in this game is pretty good, the boss fights are great. You might run into some techincal issues if the game ends up crashing but other then that it ran pretty well for me. Overall I would say check this game out if you like suda-51 games and want to try something different but don't expect the story to be groundbreaking as his other titles I would get it when it's on sale.
