I liked Ion Maiden more but oh well...
It's a great successor to games like Blood, Duke 3D, and Shadow Warrior. I am constantly impressed by VoidPoints ability to capture the nostalgic feeling of these old games with a game that has nothing to do with the initial popularity of the Build Engine. My main critique would come from the weapons available to you, I would've liked to see more creative liberaties in you arsenal rather than pistol, shotgun, and smg (although the Loverboy pistol is a cool starting gun and the bowling bombs are a great example of what I was hoping to see). Check it out, a campaign that should last you about 8-10 hours, more if you search for all the secrets, and extra modes that add even more playtime. Voidpoint did a great job with presentation as well by the way, with the ability to essentially turn this game into a product of the 90's by letting you set the framerate and resolution as well as disabling opengl. Weird controversy aside, Ion Fury is a great example of a game built by skill and passion regardless of availability.

A wonderful blast from the past
This game was entirely off my radar until, ironically, it was attacked by pathological outrage manufacturers on the highly contentious message board ResetEra. Thanks to the efforts of independent journalist Sophia Narwitz it soon became clear how erroneously maligned the development team have been and how their fantastic work was being undermined by unhinged, invented offense. The reality is that Ion Fury (nee Maiden) is a fast-paced, great to look at, irreverent blast from the past. Gameplay is fast, fluid and satisfying and besides the obvious origins, it reminded me of excellent games like Painkiller. The graphics are a perfect blend of oldschool Duke with a modern refresh that looks great in high-resolution. The humour is firmly tongue in cheek and so clearly pulpy and over the top that you'd have to be deranged to be offended by it. Compelling games like this and Dusk have shown that "old" ideas have a staying power and that there's plenty of mileage (kilometerage?) in run-and-gun games. Looking forward to whatever Voidpoint produce in the future.

Fantastic modern classic
*WHAT IS IT* This is the true sequel to the classic BUILD games many people grew up with, such as Blood, Redneck Rampage, Shadow Warrior, and especially Duke Nukem 3D - from which this game takes most of its inspiration in terms of overall feel and design. It uses the same engine, updated for modern hardware. *VISUALS* This game features visuals that are both clear and pixelated. It accomplishes this retro look by using art assets that are higher in resolution than those used in the classic BUILD engine games, but lower than those of other contemporary titles. This results in a visual style that is both reminiscent of our memories of the classics, without going as low-res as its inspirations had to due to technological limitations of that era. *AUDIO* I don't have the technical expertise to judge this in depth, but the audio mirrors the visuals in terms of their evolution. It is a throwback to the titles this game draws its inspiration from, and other games from that time -- while being a clear evolution in terms of quality. The music is damned good. They need to make this soundtrack available for download or purchase. *LEVEL DESIGN* Bigger and better sums this one up. Gameplay-wise the maps flow together with a seamlessness that not even the classics managed, and there are spectacular and memorable setpieces that stand out and will be long remembered. From a software perspective the maps feel more expansive than any BUILD game that came before it, and clearly push the classic engine to its limits. These maps were made by a team of very skilled designers who understand the BUILD engine thoroughly, which is evident from the complexity of their design. *FINAL VERDICT* By going 20 years back in time to the roots of these type of games and expanding upon what made them so great, this game does more to advance the genre than most similar games of the last decade. I can't wait to see what else this team does - hopefully those plans include expansion campaigns. 9.5/10
