3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.
Welcome to ION FURY!
Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.
Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.
Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
True tracked module music!
Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!
Voidpoint and 3drealms decided to not censor the game so they didn't remove the bottle of soap.
In my opinion Ion Fury is very good ,with a quite long campaign and excellent game design. There's not a huge variety of enemies and the weapons are nothing revolutionary, but the good level design, the huge amount of secrets, and the fast gameplay make this a must have for every fans of old- school fps.
It's all the best parts of the Build engine holy trinity: Duke's attitude and realistic environments, Shadow Warrior's enemy variety and generally better weapon balance, Blood's movement and map variety. And with the 3.0 update for Aftershock, it's also cleaned up a lot of those game engine's jank that it inherited from the original Build, which is perhaps the most impressive technical achievement of the game. It almost feels like sacrilege, I mean without the jank is it even a Build engine game?
Of that first trio of retro shooters from 2019 - Ion Fury, Amid Evil, and Dusk - this is absolutely my favorite. It does such a fantastic job of balancing "plan your fights to make them easy" and "scramble through the fight or you'll die", and every weapon feels like it fulfills an important role in your arsenal. The electrifryer easily counters head spiders, and the crossbow secondary can be supercharged to wreck giant mechs, the penetrator with short bursts to the head quickly downs missile torsos.
Secret hunting was vastly improved in the 2.0 update when the radar became capable of highlighting secrets as well as enemies, and the secrets are consistently worth tracking down on Hell Hath No Fury. Which is great, because exploring the interesting bits and bobs scattered around the corners of a Build engine map is half the fun.
It's just a really good sprite-based FPS with long, beefy campaign. And the Aftershock expansion is great too, get that.
This game is awesome!
Takes me back to everything I love about ‘90s shooters – simple, fast paced and rewarding gameplay, devoid of all modern crap like cut scenes, realism, gimmicks and console-itis.
I’ve been playing shooters since the mid ‘90s, so you can probably guess my age - yeah I’m pretty old and have a mortgage and stuff like that. I’ve played just about every shooter there is and consequently have developed a real dislike for modern shooters (with a few exceptions), so much so I don’t even bother with them anymore, preferring to replay the classics.
If you like classic shooters like Doom, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Quake, etc, you’ll love Ion Fury.
Be sure to support the developer by purchasing a copy - with our support, the developer and other independent developers will continue to produce other great games like this.
Back in 1996 I played Quake and hated Duke 3D when we tried it on LAN. I have zero nostalgia for that title or that sprite-infested engine.
But in 2019, when I got my hands on a game when you run around at full speed, shoot hordes of enemies, can backtrack not just a room or two, but sometimes a full level...
Man, this is new quality in gaming. A game where there are no cutscenes, where door don't close behind you (except briefly for boss fights, and of course between chapters), which has a secret counter, which has satisfying weapons, which has silly one-liners and puns plastered on walls, items, map names, you name it.
Not only does it allow backtracking, you actually need to do it, like in a proper game world. It's an actual world, not a series of scenes. You go somewhere, get a keycard, or power up a generator, or flip a switch, or blow something up, then you go back to where there was an obstacle which you can now pass. That's what a game world is supposed to be.
It's fast, it's fun, it's satisfying, at normal difficulty it's really forgiving, especially since you have quick save/load available at all times. It's awesome!
The only downside of this game is the constant reloading. You stop before every corner to swap between 3 different weapons and reload each one. So the potential breakneck speed of the game is hampered by this, but hey, at least it's ME deciding when to slow down!
Great guns. Fun gameplay. Awesome music. Retro game-engine. Secrets to find. Bosses. Cheats. If you like quake and duke nukem...you like this...i quarantee.
