Immortal Redneck is an FPS set in Egypt with rogue-lite elements. The game mixes old-school first-person shooter action with a rogue-lite mechanics. Frantic gameplay, twitch controls and an arcade-style feel meet randomly generated dungeons, a complete skill tree, permanent death and 9 classes with different traits.

The game revolves around a redneck tourist who wakes up mummified in ancient Egypt after an accident. Why is he here? How did he survive the accident? And why the hell is he mummified?!

The answer lies within the three danger-filled pyramids of Giza, all protected by an army of monsters and huge bosses. Obviously, your mission is to get inside the pyramids, kill all the enemies and discover what's going on!

  • Old School FPS: frantic gameplay, twitch controls and an arcade-style
  • RogueLite mechanics: randomly generated dungeons, classes, skills, permanent death but with gameplay progression
  • Nine playable classes: all with different skill sets. Players can switch classes between each play through, selecting the one most suitable for their current run
  • Complete skill tree: evolve your character, buying equipment and weapons, upgrading and acquiring new skills
  • Over 50 different weapons: traditional firearms, magical, mythological, futuristic or just plain weird weapons including a Potato Launcher. You name it, this game has it
  • Over 100 scroll modifiers: Each scroll picked up in-game changes your current run, for good (convert your enemies in to chickens) or for bad (reduces your speed of movement) and everything in between!
  • Over 35 enemies: mummies, sarcophagus, flying skulls, humanoid snakes, big fat warriors... All willing to kill you!
  • Huge bosses: two in each pyramid with unique gameplay
  • Merchant: Buy equipment and supplies that will be maintained between different games, even when you die
  • Skill Rooms: hone your skills in rooms focused on platforming and avoiding a variety of traps
  • Twitch Quest: special mode for streamers, your community will vote on what happens next!

Charming, addictive crossover game

I must admit that I'd usually assume the worst of the silly/humourous tone and colourful graphics, but luckily I decided to give this a spin while it was on giveaway. The game is a mix of a classic 90s-style first-person platformer/shooter (think Quake, Turok, etc.) and a true roguelike (explore random dungeons, get as far as you can, die, try again). If you love both types of game, this is 100% for you. The FPS/platformer elements are executed flawlessly, with tight controls, satisfying gunplay and a nice variety of enemy attack patterns, well-designed bosses and fun puzzle/trap rooms. As a roguelike, it mixes up a wide selection of thoughtfully pre-designed arena-style chambers into random dungeon layouts, built around the modern roguelike metagame of purchasing upgrades and abilities between runs while gradually working towards completion over many attempts. Ammo is tight and weapon loadout is limited. Each floor of the dungeon increases in difficulty. Dodging, jumping and timing regular reloads and weapon-switches during combat is vital. Weapons are varied, each with quite different strategic uses and strengths, and choosing which to discard or keep with you when you find something new takes consideration. Random powerups are enjoyably diverse, and lead to lots of fun and often hilariously good or bad combinations that make each run feel memorable. I've now completed the game and really can't offer any negative comments. The difficulty was perfectly balanced throughout, and it ticked all its own boxes well. Even the tongue-in-cheek tone is so self-aware of its own silliness and executed so charmingly that I can't possibly deduct marks for it. The game has a "skill tree" that's literally... A tree. How could you possibly not love that? If you like both roguelikes and FPS/platformers, you're pretty sure to like this. I'd go so far as you say that if you don't like this game, you probably didn't quite get it. Two (mummified) thumbs up.

Suprised, was expecting worse.

You're a Dixie redneck starting off as a newly resurrected mummy after your Egyptian holiday turns bad! You enter a procedurely generated pyramid full of rooms with quotas of enemies to defeat. Your ammo and health you start with is pretty much it, so use wisely. But there is NO way (at first) you'll actually complete this pyramid. No, you'll die again and again and again and again...... but you will resurrect in your little "base camp" with the gold you earned intact. That will buy you buffs and upgrades. So next time you enter that pyramid, you're just a teeny todger stronger. You still wont win though. That will take hundreds, if not thousands of such attempts, slowly grinding your ever increasingly expensive, therefore slower and grindier, stats up. Then there's another two pyramids to tackle! The poor reviews for this game do rightly highlight some of this game's faults, and had me expecting another GOG turd release. I was suprised, it's quite good actually. But my main complaint is it's TOO GRINDY. It'll take a LOOOOOONG time to actually finish this, and I'll be bored rigid of it long before that. It felt a little sluggish on the potato PC I tried it on, and some reviews do complain about how slow your character is and slow weapon reload etc. Frame rates were reasonable on lower (still looked ok) settings though. It's very rare I advise not to take the bad reviews to heart too much! But then again, this too is cursed with the gibbering raving loony 5-star review nutters and their hyperbole and BS and getting all their toadies to posrep them....... ah well....... I got it on a free offer BTW, I recommend not paying the full £15 for it, buy on offer! But you ALWAYS do that, don't you?

Giveaway surprise of the year

I never heard of this game before GoG gave it for free and I must admit Im surprised of how good this little roguelite fps is. The name make it sound a bit silly but the very minimal story and short voice lines from the main character make this mix of egyptians/redneck settings work. Music go from ok to pretty good. There is a ton of weapons, different classes with light rpg mechanics that you keep after each runs. Scrolls can change the rules of the game in both good and bad ways. 3 pyramid in total , you unlock one after the other. 7 Floors per pyramid, 2 bosses each. Each pyramid get new enemies/weapon/scroll/bosses. Enemies have fair attack patterns, only bosses get homing attacks. Im not very good at fps so Id say the last pyramid got a bit hard, but a good fortune with the RNG got me through the last boss at around 50hour total , roughly 75% achievements. While the game lack in end-game content , Im happy with the time I had with it. Would give it 5 stars if it had some more end-game like creating custom loadouts and have a 4th endless/customisable pyramid. Story mode Blood style and PvP would just be icing on the cake ;) Recommend, will follow what else the studio create in the future.

Fun but lacks polish

A roguelite FPS, sort of like Ziggurat. It's fun to play for a while, but its shortcomings become apparent very quickly: * Randomness is not enough. It doesn't feel like each run is unique at all. All rooms are the same and just arranged in different order. * The theme is ancient Egypt, but for the most part I really don't feel like I'm fighting ancient Egyptian monsters. * The main character's spoken lines are very few and sparse in between. The game barely reminds you of the titular protagonist... or that the game is supposed to be "comedic" * Some weapons feel OK, a few feel great, but most weapons are just utter junk. For example: The Minigun needs a whole bag of ammo just to kill a couple of enemies, the Shotgun is too inconsistent, automatic weapons are usually extremely inaccurate and have extremely limited max ammo capacity, some explosive weapons deal friendly fire but others do not (and there's no way to find out except the hard way). On the other hand, weapons meant to be used over distance (e.g. Sniper rifle, Bow) are balanced well individually, but unfortunately you'll barely get to use them, since most rooms are too cramped for that. * The biggest issue: Chests (and sometimes enemies) will give you upgrades and abilities in the forms of Scrolls. There's no way to know what a scroll will be before you pick it up. And there's no way to get rid of a scroll after you pick it up. Well, the devs decided this was the perfect system to introduce artificial difficulty through Cursed Scrolls. You can't tell them apart from normal Scrolls, and they work the same way (can't know what they are until picked up, can't be gotten rid of). These can be really debilitating and can ruin whole runs. At first they seem quirky and fun, but there's just too many of them, and you are guaranteed to get something that will break your run. It's just a cheap way to extend the gameplay time.

Fun but not for long

At first glance the game seems fun - fast paced, nice looking shooter. Then comes the realization that the beginning of the game is actually all there is. True, the enemies are getting harder to kill but it all boils down to repeating the same rooms in a more or less random order and grinding for money to buy skills upgrades. And that's it. Fun for an hour. Then gets boring. It's the modern "replacement" for game design - make it random and call it rogue-lite.
