The author of the original short story, Harlan Ellison came up with the title thinking about: - total helplessness - violation of bodily autonomy - a conscious being trapped without agency The themes of such are derived from se*ual assault on minors, adults in general and street gang violence which he had interviews with victims of violence in general with. Abuse in ch*ldhood family homes, all the cruel sh*t in this world, but the main thematic was about being trapped, helpless, with no agency. This is the point and click adventure adaptation which is not like the original short story or the comic, all three share a common theme with the main villain A.M. and other aspects but diverge in many aspects but that only makes each medium more interesting and diverse. Yet I think each is authentic to what the author invisioned. This is a very hard and rough point and click adventure game. Unforgiving, almost impossible to finish for some. And for me personally, the peak of the entire psychological horror genre of sci-fi in particular. Trapped by a machine god in his own realityshifting universe in which for Aeons the last few tortured humans are constantly subjected to a variety of the most extreme variety of physical and mental harm one could endure..... Another premise is, if god is mad and a machine, death is salvation, but if god controls death, reality itself shoudl rather be dead. Non-existence is better than being a victim of A.M. I have seen sci-fi mixed with cosmic or existential horror before, but this short story / game / comic has to be the most extreme that was ever created. Makes you shake and shiver just thinking about it. And even cry if you are a survivor yourself. Needs a remaster or remake with gameplay and pacing fixes, these sierra era PaC´s are bloody too elitist to enjoy nowadays despite being masterpieces in their subject matter. Hence only 4 out of 5 Stars. 1 star for basically needing a walkthrough at some point.

This game works better as a historical artifact than as an enjoyable, playable game. The concept is great and the writing has some bright spots (though brutally on-the-nose at times), but it has all of the worst trappings of 1990's point and click adventure games with frustrating, inscrutable puzzles - unless you REALLY want to engage in hours of tedious trial and error, you'll need a guide. That being said, I still recommend this game if you view it more in the academic sense than a "have a fun time" sense. It's a fascinating snapshot of PC gaming in the 1990's. It's a solid attempt at mature storytelling, held back by over-the-top writing and acting and the worst tendencies of adventure games.

I can remember, when I was kid, I always wanted to play this game, just because its name was so exciting... Maybe it was good I didnt, because it could have left some long-term issues... :D but I dont know why I didnt play it later and came back it to just now... and I can say, even with the game being quite old in those days, it is so amazing... the thrilling stories of every character, all the voice-acting and even the graphic, which is old but very nice for its days and last but not least all the hints taken from encyclopedies, Bible and other books... this is pure jewell for every person who loves adventure games, great story and horror atmosphere...

I lve this type classic single player games, no microtransacsions, offline and pure gaming, but due some glitch, i couldn't see the happy ending

First, the good: -The puzzles were by and large reasonable and entertaining. -Nostalgia 90's graphics -Decent voice acting -Each character is played in their own limited environment, which was a successful way to limit the traditional problem of "wandering around forever to figure out what's there before you actually play the game." The bad: -As others noted, its pretty buggy. I didn't encounter anything game breaking, but it did break immersion. -As others noted, the game really requires using a walkthrough to complete. Not because the puzzles are hard, but because there's game mechanics that are never explained in-game that dictate if you can complete the game. Example: That book you start with in your inventory? Don't ever look at it to see what it is, or you can't win. The ugly: The worst part of this game is that as much as it pitches itself as having "adult themes," it's really juvenile in its writing. It tries to be edgy, but only accomplishes a shallow pulling together of overused tropes. The characters never get a chance to feel relatable, and the redemption arc of each is so rushed as to feel forced and unbelievable. The story plays like an outline to be filled out later with actual depth and development, but never is. Throughout playing this game, I just found myself bored and disconnected, occasionally rolling my eyes at the cartoonish chaotic-evil villainy of AM, who also happens to be the only character with consistent, understandable motivation and personality.
