In 2032 an Earth that knows only peace is forced to relearn the art of war.

Twenty years have passed since the population of Earth did a fine job of destroying nearly everything in one final struggle for power by the politicians and military leaders. Twenty years have been spent building a near Utopia, a society where currency and finance are irrelevant, a planet without hunger or poverty. All weapons have been destroyed to ensure peace. But hidden away in an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, a cabal of old-world magnates: ex-leaders, financiers, politicians, and despots, are planning a return to the greed fueled, hate filled past. And there in no way to fight them. Except this one last remaining Adaptive Cruiser – The Antaeus.

Antaeus Rising combines explosive action with powerful real-time strategy. Take command of powerful aircraft carrier/manufacturing platform. Create military units with your carrier using the most advanced nano-technology known by the modern world and lead an army against the forces of the Old World Cabal. Plan your assault from within your carrier and than enter your units for some third-person mayhem! The fate of world is in your hands, are you able to hold it?
  • Lead your army as a commander or take control of one of the vehicles and join the battle.
  • Customize your vehicles to make them fit perfectly into your current mission requirements.
  • Enjoy a storyline written by award-winning author Warren Ellis and narrated by Tom Baker.

If only modern games could match such quality!

Action? Check. Strategy? Check. Fun? Double check. Add these three elements together in one quality product and you'll get a game that cannot be missed. From the humble first mission to the epic final mission, Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising kept me entertained. First, the centerpiece of the entire game: the Antaeus. Classed as a cruiser by some, carrier by others, it really combines the two to be a powerful carrier-cruiser. The ability to design and produce several vehicle types while floating on the seas enables the Antaeus to take the fight to the enemy, no matter where they may hide. While produced units push the enemy back into the seas, the Antaeus can bombard targets with her powerful cannons to soften them up or destroy them entirely. Leading the fight against the enemy is the player in the role of Captain. But he is not alone - to aid him in his fight he has a number of pilot personalities (more details in the game) at his command, along with advice and objectives issued from others via a satellite link. The Captain must use the assets available to him to achieve his objectives and ultimately defeat the enemy. When battle erupts, the Captain can allow his pilots to fight on their own with a few orders, or he can remotely take control of any vehicle and lead the charge. Helicopters, hovercraft, tanks, support vehicles, and the Antaeus herself must all be used together to achieve victory in a campaign to save the world. Recon, stealth, surgical strikes, and full frontal assaults are all key to survival. And only the Captain can make the final decisions during a battle. However, even a gem such as this has unfortunate flaws. First off, Antaeus herself. For all the power she possesses, there are zero defenses except for the units she produces. None. If even a light enemy recon chopper manages to slip in and attack Antaeus, she is utterly helpless without the support of a unit or two. As powerful as her cannons are, they have only a few shells available per mission - if any at all - and are wasted if used on mobile enemy units. As the peak of naval vessels from the last war, the Antaeus should have at least had a few missile racks to fend off light air raids. Second, there is little real replay value. As entertaining as the campaign was, it cannot stand on its own for replay. A skirmish option to fight different battles on campaign maps would have been an excellent feature, but was unfortunately not included. A damned shame, that. Lastly, the AI of the pilots you have available. While well above average, they still suffer from painful mistakes, like ignoring a larger threat as they attack another target. A glaring example is an anti-air turret hammering away at a pilot's helicopter while he continues attacking a different target, or simply flies past. Even so, those are the only flaws I can think of as I write this quick review. That in itself should say something about the game! Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising is a game that should not be missed by any means. Fun gameplay, entertaining story, quality voice acting, clean interface... these are all present. If only games of today could be this polished and entertaining!

Good to see this again...

A true classic, if not as well known as some of the other titles on here. Hostile Waters is a slick blend of action and strategy that is immensely playable and a hell of a lot of fun. It's a bit slow to start, but give it a few missions and you'll come to love it. If it had feature multiplayer, I bet it would still be played today. And for geek bonus points, it's narrated by Tom Baker (Dr Who) and Avon from Blake's 7.

Bad pathfinding

The title pretty much sums up my experience with Hostile Waters. I played all the way through, experienced all that the team brought to the table and the constant between all 20 some levels is bad pathfinding. However bad pathfinding leads the game to be played directly which is one of the the designs intentions. The noticeable difference the player has on battles when controlling units directly can be staggering. While the ai is good at combat, the player can make much better tactical use of the terrain in comparison. Ive seen the ai make great jukes and fakes in order to dodge shots in battle but the ai has an awful time just getting to the battle. Often I would manually drive the AI to the battle and then let the AI take over to fight. I found this to be the quickest way accomplish my tactical goals. Learning what movement was possible over the terrain to a bit however. Much of the geo/height map is very uneven/noisy and while the steep cliffs may look inaccessible (especially compared to other games) most can be driven over, at least by the player any way. The AI is utterly daunted by the jagged landscape often making a Z pattern instead of just moving in a straight line. The pathfinding bugs cant be blamed on the terrain entirely tho as Ive seen friendly AI turn around in circles like a dog going to sleep before finally heading off in the specified direction I had given them. The terrain + bad pathing = lots of micro management of units on the player's part which takes away from the design of having the player command from the heat of battle. Instead I found myself constantly viewing the tactical map, which pauses the game, in order to check on my AI allies to make sure they hadn't wandered into the enemy base or gotten stuck or were taking the scenic rout. This constant pausing/ai mothering really drug the game down for me. Instead of crisp, exciting combat its rather stiff and plodding. Overall the lvl design is average for current times with lots of the standard rts gather-resources-build-army-destroy-enemy-base missions (damn near every1). There's one boss fight which is average but definitely a welcome break in the campaign. I wish they had more of these during the missions instead of just a bigger enemy bases. For me the base gameplay isnt good enough to justify doing the same thing over and over again. I cant recommend this game as it is difficult not by design but by bugs. More frustrating than fun. Ill play Sacrifice next and post a comparison review there.

I bought this game when it came out

This game is one of the greats. I bought this game when it originally came out. I still keep it on my low end laptops for when I need something good to play when I am away from home. Its a damn shame is has no multiplayer. It would truely have been great if it could be played online against. It would rival the likes of Counterstrike and battlefield 1942 in playability and popularity. With user content, this game could easily have been one of the all time best games ever made in the genre, if not one of the better games ever made altogether. It gets very difficult later on in the story. I have completed this game, but it requires a logical cap and strategical thinking to beat those wiley enemy AI. Don't underestimate the power of repair scarabs. You are better off with more scrap than firepower. No amount of armour plating will save you if you don't have dual repping scarabs (to look after each other0 and a foraging scarab running all the time to keep those creation engines pumping. Personally i think the war interface is very easy to use and the story is very realistic. I certainly see parts of the technology mentioned already available to government organisations and the more powerful commericial entities out there. The storyline is not that far out of what is possible in a few years time. Do no miss out. For a fiver you have to try it. Else look out for it at a carboot sale. Brilliant Game. You will never get bored of trying new ways to beat the game.. long as u leave it at least 6 monthsapart after each complete. I ill be playing this for as long as Windows is compatiable.

Hidden Gem

This game is one of those hidden gems, very few people bought it when it was released and it deserved to do far better than it did on release. A great action/strategy title that still holds up today.
