For once, go Hollow!

I seriously cannot recommend this game enough. I'd like to start off by saying that I have had my control issues with the game. Jumps not registering in time, certain moves "sticking" for a bit, etc. However, the game is so fantastically good that it overshadows those issues. This is a Metroidvania game, and with that comes the exploration and backtracking you would expect. Except, the backtracking is a bit more extensive here. You're not just going through environments. The games makes it feel like you're exploring a derelict kingdom. You'll encounter cities, mines, villages, and you'll visit them all more than once. The characters also play a role in making this game a bit larger than it actually is. Each shopkeeper and other non-hostile NPC filled to the brim with personality. Not to mention the scenery. I was worried at first that things would appear too similar. That the color tones and such wouldn't change. I am happy to say that those fears were misplaced, as this game has done nothing but astound me at every turn. I love the feeling of exploration in this game. Charting out areas has been very fun for me. You see, you don't have a map of any area. You have to purchase one. But the maps you purchase are incomplete, as the mapmaker can't travel everywhere. Some places are too dangerous. So you have to buy a quill and chart out areas yourself. But adventuring keeps you too busy to simply draw a map at any time! You have to sit down at a bench, where your little bug will draw on his map and update all the places that you've been! It draws out the game a bit more, but it makes it feel like I'm really trying to chart out my paths through the labyrinth of rooms. And I love it. For $15, I really cannot recomment this game enough. Get the soundtrack if you can. It's filled with many piano pieces, something I've missed from musical scores of games. I've put in around 18 hours into the game so far and still have not finished it. Now THAT's a great game!

Honestly Incredible

Easily one of my favorite games, played it way too much. The soundtrack is amazing, the environment/art is beautiful, and the little sidequest (improving sword) don't feel like a hassle. 10/10 u/linuxgamingquestions

An excellent metroidvania for veterans

Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania style game where the focus is on combat with some precise platforming gameplay. While the game's combat is very fun, there are many flaws and quality-of-life issues that make it very annoying and tedious to explore. Despite the huge size of the world, there are no ways to display the locations of all items needed for 112% completion. This forces the player to constantly refer to 3rd party maps throughout the game. The result is a very polarizing experience where the game can be very fun one moment, and extremely tedious another. Fortunately, the vast majority of cons only apply on your first progression. Pros: - Fun and challenging combat. Some bosses are especially fun and hectic. Sisters of Battle and Pure Vessel are pure fast paced combat and my favorite bosses in the whole game. - Controls are fast, fluid, and responsive, well suited for a fast paced action game. - Huge world to explore. - Graphics are cute. - Creating builds with charms is fun. Cons: - Despite the huge world, the game does not do a good job of displaying everything needed for a full completion. This forces the player to constantly refer to 3rd party maps in order to see what is where. - The map system is clunky. You start with no map, and the map doesn't dynamically update as you explore. - Progression is too vague, even for a Metroidvania game. - Level design is bad. Many zones are just mazes. - Some zones are too dark, making it difficult to play. - It can be frustrating trying to see enemies and projectiles due to visual clutter. - If you die, you must get back to your corpse to retrieve your money. If you die on the way to your corpse, you lose all your money. - Too much backtracking, even for a Metroidvania game.

One of the best games i ever played

Besides the Dark Souls games this is one of the games i mostly enjoyed in the last years. Wonderful artstyle and soundtrack. Challenging gameplay. And a very loveable main charakter :-) For those of you who are not afraid of high difficulty and games which explain almost none of its mechanics. And those who like to explore and sink into the atmosphere of a game for many many hours. This is the right game for you. Don't hestitate. Buy and enjoy it.
