Heroes of Might and Magic® 4: Complete

While Heroes 3 is clearly the best, Heroes of Might and Magic 4 remains to this day to be my favourite. It has the greatest soundtrack of the whole series. While some don't like the art style, I find it quite beautiful in the 2.5D format, though I can understand why people prefer the fairy tale book aesthetic of HOMM2 or watercolour paintings of HOMM3. This also includes the two expansions which I never had the opportunity to play before back in the CD days. I like how the factions are themed on philosophy instead of simply geography, Life, Order, Nature, Chaos, Death and Might. I also like how hereos can participate in battle and become absolute demigods, especially in the campaigns. I also like how the spellschools are more specific to each faction that really highlight their themes (read the spell descriptions, they really encapsulate the respective factions well). The campaigns in the original really stand out to me as they all read like classic pulp fantasy novels. I can't speak for the expansion campaigns. It is truly remarkable for all the game's faults it came out as well as it did as did considering 3D0 and New World Computing went under so shortly after it's release. The way I describe this game is like my love of mint chocolate chip ice cream. While I won't always go for it, it is my favourite ice cream flavour that floods me with nostalgia of my childhood. This game for me is mint chip, in PC game form. I love it to pieces.

Me and my brothers (I have 6) hook up every year and play this in a big old lan party. Its a bit of a family tradition and everyone gets involved eager to see who comes out on top this year. Being an older gamer my reactions are not great but this is a lot of fun. Maybe not a new fangled 3d game but five stars from me!

Most people I know didnt like this one as much as all the others, because it was different, and because the developers changed things.. i loved it, and still do :D

Please release a patch for a decent Win10 performance. The game freezes and stops working at all. the game itself is 10/10

Heroes of Might and Magic 4 is the best game in the series. Yes, 3 gets all the love, but 4 improves on 3 in so many ways. The units are all very unque, all having special skills and abilities that really make the tactical combat shine. Everything is perfectly done from fantasy archetypes, like a pack of harpies that can swoop in from across the battlefield, attack, then fly away before a retaliation. The mage units actually have spell lists. The Heroes are on the battlefield fighting and becoming super powerhouse units themselves. The new tactical combat system is a huge improvement over the chess board layout of the rest of the series. And the graphics are amazing. everything looks so well colored, and expressive. The units look like 3D models rendered as sprites, a popular techinque at the time that makes the visuals really pop. And then there is the soundtrack. The game is worth the price just for the soundtrack alone. This game features the legendary Paul Romero's very best work. Its audio bliss. Then there is value. There is hundreds of hours of content in this Complete edition. Plus 20 years of high quality fan made maps to download, from epic battle maps to full on RPG's. The best map editing tools of any Heroes game. There is also a super quick HD patch that is super easy to install and gives you super crisp HD widesceen. If you like Heroes, or 4X, or strategy games in general, you do yourself a diservice not to own and play Heroes of Might and Magic 4 Complete.
