If only I could still make new maps, Eminently replayable.

GoG asked me to write a review about Heroes 3 in late 2024. What can one say? It is a perfect game and time prooved it. People still play the series 25 years after their release (and I am not even getting into the modding community). This is a game where you have a base of operations (a castle), a hero who can move on the map and a regiment of soldi.... ehhh, this you can read anywhere. Why is this game still alive?? I consider the mid-late '90s the golden era of (PC) gaming. (yes it coincides with my late teenage years, still) Hardware was not strong enough to produce photorealistic graphics - beauty is harder to reach; gaming was not mainstream enough to push yearly releases thus enabling studios to take time perfecting their game; many gaming ideas where new (or in new setting) and not banal yet and their gameplay was simply long-term fun. Heroes 3 is one of these, done masterfully and every aspect pushed to the limit. Agree, it is the third installment, Jon (Van Caneghem) had opportunities to refine it. I love the high-fantasy setting and fairy-tale pixel graphics, I think it is a timeless beauty. The gameplay is near impossible to get bored by, there is always some new combination you have not seen yet. It has good campaigns (for those who like the Might and Magic word even very good story), limitless man-made scenarios and a random map generator. It has a living online community and matchmaking. I would bet nice money that every day hundreds of thousands of people listen to its music and recognize it in youtube viedeos. And I didn't even thouch the modding. Just try it. Takes you on a journey you'd of sword and sorce... I mean, might and magic of epic heroes and most evil villains. You can be both. See you there!
