A build containing the Union Patch is now live in GOG Galaxy and via offline installers. The classic version of Gothic is available on "Vanilla" public branch in GOG Galaxy and as an offline installer in "Extras" section.
Im Königreich von Myrtana herrscht Krieg. Horden von Orks sind in das Gebiet der Menschen eingefallen und der König des Landes benötigt eine Unmenge an Erz, um genügend Waffen zu schmieden, damit seine Armee dieser Bedrohung standhalten kann. Jeder der sich nicht nach dem Gesetz hält, wird in diesen dunklen Zeiten in die riesige Strafkolonie von Khorinis geschickt, um dort das so nötige Erz abzubauen.
Die gesamte Gegend, die als "Die Kolonie" bezeichnet wird, wird von einer magischen Grenze umgeben; einem Bereich mit einem Durchmesser von zwei Kilometern, der die Strafkolonie vom Rest der Welt komplett abschottet. Die Grenze kann von außen nach innen überquert werden, aber wer einmal drin ist kann nie wieder entkommen. Die Grenze wurde aber zu einem zweischneidigen Schwert, denn die Gefangenen haben dadurch eine Möglichkeit zur Revolte gesehen. Die Kolonie wurde nun in drei feindliche Gruppen eingeteilt, und der König war gezwungen, für sein Erz einen Handel einzugehen und nicht nur einfach darauf Anspruch zu erheben.
Sie werden über die Grenze mitten in dieses Gefängnis geworfen. Sie stehen mit dem Rücken zur Wand, müssen versuchen zu überleben und unbeständige Allianzen eingehen bis Sie am Ende entkommen können.

Worst game I've ever played
After 30 minutes of struggling with the most ridiculous controls I've ever come across in a game, I deleted Gothic from my computer never to be played again. That a game that's supposedly one of the best RPGs out has this abysmal of a game controls is unpardonable, IMO, and for a seasoned gamer just not something I'm willing to struggle with. Unfortunately, I have all the other Gothic games too -- but they are going to be given away to some poor unsuspecting soul very soon :) Awful game. I see now why JoWood went out of business.

Worst. Interface. Ever.
Gothic gets 1/5 stars from me, only because 0/5 isn't an option. The control setup was so horrifically clunky, counterintuitive, and downright unusable that I couldn't force myself past the five minute mark. This game might be the cat's pajamas when it comes to an open and immersive world, but sadly, I'll never find out for myself. The interface is simply that bad. Gothic was far and away my most disappointing purchase on GOG to date.

Horribly made game
I don't know where all the good ratings for this come from, Gothic is a horribly made game. I'm sure there is allot of game-play, and a decent story somewhere in there, but the horrible combat, disgusting controls and UI, and bad animations just ruined it for me. It would not have been so bad if it were an older game that wasn't expected to have those kind of things, but it isn't, it's a game that should have the conventions of a modern RPG like Morrowind or Oblivion. Not a CRPG, just a really badly made new RPG that should be avoided. Play some elder scrolls instead.
