The heartless Shivans emerged through subspace near Earth, harboring technology light years ahead of anything seen before. They made no attempt to communicate. They did not respond to your heralds. They simply attacked and destroyed everything in their path.
As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat just changed.
This is the beginning of The Great War.
Includes the original Freespace and the Silent Threat mission pack
Multiple beautiful space fighters and bombers with customizable loadouts
A gripping story full of epic space battles and plot twists
I bought this game back when it was $60! It ran on a Pentium II 500 with 256MB of RAM and a minimal video card. I really like how they preserved the game. BUT -- has anyone who had the original noticed that The Gauntlet is missing? That was one of my favorite parts. You could really test your skills. It went from one minimal enemy to two, to three to better ships to small destroyers to finally a full size battle ship with fighter escort. I miss that.
Freespace is an excellent space fighter sim, only really outdone by its successor at the end of its era. If you enjoyed the likes of Star Wars: X-wing or Tie Fighter, you will enjoy this game as well, and perhaps find it familiar, and it could be considered a must have for any would be spacefighter jock.
Combat is fast and intense, though still fluid, but there are occasional breaks in the action. While most of the missions are standard fighter on fighter search and destroy or escort missions, there is some mission variance within these bounds as well as a couple other types of mission including a couple that don't fit into the standard mold (for instance a scouting mission in a flying junker that WILL break down at the most inopportune moment). You can customize your loadout to fit your playstyle and the upcoming mission by choosing between several fighters and bombers for yourself and your wingmates to take and choosing the weapons they will be carrying, and once in a fight you can shunt power around to focus on speed, attack and defensive capabilites along with commanding your wingmates and (ocassionally) calling in reinforcements.
The missions are, for the most part, great, and they are glued together by a reasonable, albeit not exceptional or particularly original, storyline.
The voice acting is reasonable, and the sound effects and music are good, though suffer some from compression required of older games that ran on systems with much less storage available.
Graphics are obviously dated, though not distractingly so, and as such an old game, you will be playing on fairly low resolution.
The Silent Threat expansion, on the other hand isn't nearly as good. While the presence of some community made missions is notable, overall, the missions are extremely standard held together by a fairly flimsy story.
Unfortunately, even given the praise, I have a hard time recommending Freespace itself. Not only does Freespace 2 improve on everything Freespace did right, Freespace 2 hosts an excellent modding community through the Source Code Project on hardlight.net who have built upon the Freespace engine in the form of Freespace Open. FSO not only sports an improved game engine, but also graphical and sound improvements. The Freespace campaign is available for FSO as Freespace Port with the graphical improvements of FSO including new models and textures, some updated cutscenes and the original soundtrack remixed by Freespace's composer, Dan Wentz. Also on offer is Silent Threat Reborn which takes the bare bones story of Silent Threat and improves on it, expanding it with new missions and improving the existing ones.
Beyond that, of course, is the great gameplay of Freespace 2 and the plethora of fan campaigns for it as well.
The Saint's Row series was a mistake, because Voltron should have been pumping sequels for this aging, ugly and beyond bad-ass masterpeice. Buy it, and murder ALL the shivians
I picked up this game about a year after it's original release date. It was during my high school years and I can say with absolute certainty that this game and it's sequel were responsible for a two to three decrease in my GPA. I was hooked. I picked these up because I had been a huge X-Wing vs TIE Fighter fan and was looking for similar gameplay. Well, was everything I wanted and more...Engrossing story, stellar combat, great graphics and good controls. If you are into this genre, you won't be able to find a better series.
Oh boy! GOG are geniuses for making this title one of the inaugural titles! It is, to my mind, one of the best space sims ever released! The explosions and size of ships have never really been bettered, and beam weapon destruction no better rendered! The AI is superb and the story of high quality. The missions are all very different and unique in space games! The fact that for $5.99 you get this AND the expansion is just brilliant and probably makes this title the best value item of the initial range!
