Absolutely the best.
I bought the first Freespace years ago, played it then lost it the disk!! The most interactive game I've ever played, incorporating flight controls with squadron command. It sucks you in with the story line. Love this game. And the sequel, FreeSpace 2.

Still holds up!
Played Freespace 1 years ago and felt it was a real treat - and bought 1+2 on this site. To my surprise, the graphics still hold up - sure the game doesn't have bump mappng and parallax mapping and all that goodness - but the models are nice and the only time you might feel the graphics lacking is on the big ships where the texture is not so pretty. But besides that - the small ships look ok, the explosions are great, the effects are great - the atmosphere and gameplay is awesome! But if this review put you down on the graphics side - I woyuld still want you to try it out - why? Because the Indie-scene isn't that much better alot of the games graphic wise, but they argue instead for better feeling, atmosphere and so on - if you are an indie game person then you must give this space sim classic, made by a big studio, a chance!

wing commander fans need to play this!
i have tried many games old and new,trying to find a space sim as good as the wing commander series is to me.some are more advanced, some have huge galaxies,but none have the stories or atmosphere i was looking for, until i found freespace great frikkin game man!!!! i can't wait to finish so i can get freespace 2.

Classic space shooter
They don't make them like this anymore. This is just a space shooter. No economy, no grind, nothing. Start the game, fly, shoot. The campaign is nice, the lore is also nice. The music is okay. The voice acting is good. The graphics are a bit dated, but still work quite well. This was a great game at the time and still holds up.

Not quite there for me...
I love space games. From Elite (and Elite 2: Frontier) to Freelancer, and from Colony Wars to X3, I snap them up like candy.. and there have been far too few attempts at them that this is immediately an attractive game to me. It's exactly what it says on the tin: A space combat sim. The controls are friendly, the combat is what you'd expect, and the story is adequate... but I don't love it. The story isn't what you'd get in Wing Commander, and in those you get a similar combat experience too. It reminds me of a less-polished Colony Wars, in fact.. or a hybrid of the two... but perhaps I was weaned and different games, and Freespacers would think the reverse. :) I wasn't, though, and this is my review. It fights to a four because damn it, it's got pep.. and even if it isn't quite up to either of those in my eyes, it doesn't deserve a three!
