Feeling of classic FPS from the 90s
Timelapse animations, opponents and elements of 2D in a 3D environment; first aid kits and life points, non-reloading weapons, powerups during dynamic combat with numerous opponents.
Custom combat experience
With scripture in one hand and weapons powered by an unknown substance in the other, the player will face the challenge of maintaining their humanity. It is up to the player to decide how their equipment evolves, and to find ways of defeating hordes of unpredictable opponents.
Dynamic level of madness
Directly influencing not only the audio-visual experience, but the gameplay itself, its effect varies depending on the current level of player’s madness.
The game is presented in a comic book style
Hand-drawn graphics designed to maintain a distinctive comic book look, where any screenshot from the game could be a part of a new comic book.
Mood straight from Lovecraft's dark novels
All throughout the game, the player will feel the atmosphere of dread and horror that the works of H.P. Lovecraft are renowned for. Surrounded by the occult and forces of eternal evil, experience the feelings of hopelessness, madness and confusion, and the burning need to find answers and bring back some semblance of reason and sanity to the world.
Many climatic levels and a varied bestiary
A diverse world entirely made by hand, full of interesting enemies ranging from possessed inhabitants to monsters straight out of your worst nightmares.
Two heroes to choose from
Each with their own, unique development tree. Experience the story from the perspective of either a priest or a journalist.
Title says it all : the starts is great, pacing and mechanics are delivered neatly and after maybe half the game, it's almost as if the devs had either no more time, no motivation left, or no money.
Completing the game felt more tedious than anything and when eventually I met the final boss, it went so much more easily than some "room full of ennemies" from earlier levels !
What creates such a drag is that past the middle, you've seen it all. Key-door-monsters. Lots of games do the same and remain great ; in this case, it's the level design that falls apart and fails to deliver any real surprises to keep the gameplay afloat.
Maybe keep abilities on check for later levels ? Make a better use of the weapon upgrade wheel : as it is, it almost felt more cosmetics than real game-changing.
Such a dissapointment. Like someone else suggested, pick the OST instead.
Forgive Me Father has excellent enemy design. There are no hitscan baddies - ranged enemies fire dodgable projectiles. Shot placement matters - headshots do extra damage, and many of the enemies can be nerfed by a well placed shot. Zombies go down with a headshot, as opposed to several body shots, but there is a zombie model that carries a severed head and slams it on the bloody stump to keep fighting when it's 'normal' head is blown off. That's grotesque and hilarious and wonderful. The mysterious troopers wearing rebreathers go feral and turn from ranged cover-seeking tactical soldiers into suicidal melee fighters if you shoot the tank of whatever they're breathing off their back. There are a few more similar examples.
The first two levels are excellent, with limited ammo and hordes of enemies making things tense. From there things go downhill quick. You'll very quickly have a small arsenal and several leveled weapons that make mincemeat out of most enemies, and the game's only available response is to just start swarming you with enemies. It rapidly degrades from a tense survival FPS into being a first-person bullet hell. Hallways and fields give way to repeated arenas, most with enough healing items to bring you to full between dodging sessions. Things continue to degrade - at one point late in the game there's Xen-esque jumping sections intermixed with warped in ambushes along narrow, cover-free platforms.
Halfway through the game there's a big fun twist, complete with a multi-level descent into the source of the chaos. Finally, after a few fun levels you overcome the source of your struggle, and ... then the game just goes on? Unconnected levels continue for a few hours, until you get to another ending later that completely ignores the twist.
Having beat it, I think I would have rather replayed Project Warlock again, which has a similar art style and does most of what this game does right but without any of the glaring flaws or late game slog.
It simply is a FPS, but my issue it consistently stutters why? Just why? thankfully presing "Esc" will pause the game to help mitigate any damage that might've happened in the abrupt stop in the flow of gameplay otherwise I'd 2 Star this.
I got to say the game is intense and I love every second of it.
If you like boomer shooters and wish to fire into a crowd of unspeakable horrors in self defense,
this is the game for you. You can choose between two characters that will have thier own playstyles
on top abilities that will help you on your journey.
Every firefight is intense but can be overcomed, and atmosphere and artstyle is gorgeous to look at
when you get the chance to admire the environments and weapons you weld in your hands.
It can feel bright and hard to look at time when the gloom effects happen, but it is something
I can expect when dealing a setting with H.P. Lovecraft's work.
I highly reccomend it when you feel the urge to go through a bunch of boomer shooters, and to
use this game as a time sink for yourself you can go through it all over again in new game plus mode after you beat it the first time, and an endless mode for more more endless mobs to slaughter by you
Holy/Journalist might.
