One for the Ages

This is a haunting masterpiece, indeed. Impeccably paced, gorgeously drawn, and voice acted with feeling, I have been carried away by what Inklingwood Studios has accomplished, with only two core members on the writing/design team. Murphy McCallan is a dashing lad whose heart is in the right place, but is not afraid to get his hands dirty in order to do what is right, and he has a worthy antagonist, matched in cunning. But the real star of the game is the Bellemore Manor, an antebellum mansion that is a home to a suspiciously populous ghost community, and many mysteries within the nooks and crannies of the mansion. Details in every corner offer a piece of environmental storytelling, a clue, a daub of colour added to a sumptuous painting that is not afraid to change and show the bones beneath the rosy-cheeked complexions and sunlight-spared skin. Puzzle-wise, this game plays fair with the information given out, and even when I was stumped, very few hints were needed to get me back on the right track. Most of the time simply nudging me towards a location that I thought I have exhausted was enough to find my flow again, and once I have found a solution, I had to realise just what a foolish mortal I have been. I am certainly going to play this again, to re-experience it in a more knowing manner, and take more notes to see if I have caught every hint and every morsel of plot that adds up to the secrets of this truly gothic edifice. Heads... I mean _hats_, hats off to the developers!

Feels like a classic

You know how there are games you've played in the past, which give you a warm and cozy feeling by just thinking of them, even if they might probably not hit similar if you'd play them today? Well, for me, Foolish Mortals is a game that gives me exactly that feeling I had when playing games like Monkey Island 2, The Dig and Broken Sword. On the surface, the game already shows its biggest strength, which is an absolutely stunning presentation, with beautifully hand-painted backgrounds, a Hollywood-quality soundtrack in the vein of James Horner and Danny Elfman, and a stellar voice cast, giving their all to bring these characters to life (and death). But these are just a vehicle for a story full of heart, humor, mystery, twists and turns, gaining momentum and raising the stakes with each chapter. The puzzles remain logical throughout, but even if you should get stuck, the (adjustable) dynamic hint system will gently nudge you in the right direction, while a journal of tiered hints offers you more substantial solutions, should you need them. Aside from those support features, the game has all the bells and whistles of modern adventure games, like double-click-to-run navigation, quick exists, a fast travel map and hotspot highlighting. In other words: It plays smooth as butter. Foolish Mortals is a game any fan of the genre shouldn't miss, and accessible enough for any newcomers as well. If you like cozy ghost stories along the lines of The Haunted Mansion, or pirate adventures like Pirates of the Caribbean, you'd feel right at home on the island of Devil's Rock.

Good game with QoL issues

The game has good art, voice acting, and writing. The characters have a lot of personality and are entertaining. There is a decent amount of unique environments and the game does a good job of making it feel like time is progressing throughout the night. The game also has a good sense of humor. My main issue with the game are QoL problems. The game's walk/run speed is a bit too slow, so it takes forever to walk across the screen. There is no pausing or dialogue skipping during cutscenes and some of them are quite long. You also can't overwrite existing saves, so you have to manually delete saves to keep the save file list reasonably sized. Its not a major issue, but I still think its enough to cost the game half a star. I found the puzzles to be logical and not too easy. It is sometimes hard to tell where to go next because the game has a large inventory and you often have a bunch of potential objectives. The hint system is helpful in that scenario, and it usually just guides you where to go. There are also a handful of puzzles that aren't what I call illogical, but its a bit of a stretch for the player to figure out the solution. Overall, though, I'd say the puzzle design is really solid. This is a good game, and I highly recommend playing it. Hopefully the minor QoL issues will be fixed, since this has the potential to be a classic.

A Modern Classic

If you like the first two Broken Sword games then I can’t recommend this enough. It’s the game I’ve been waiting for since Broken Sword 2 was released in 1997. It has everything that I love about those games: beautiful background art, eccentric characters, a great story, logical puzzles, excellent music and interesting locations that are oozing in atmosphere. And it’s really, really funny. Length-wise you really do get your money’s worth. I had hints turned off and it took me around 20 hours to finish, and even then I was gutted that it had ended. I really hope this does well so that the devs can keep making stuff like this. This is an absolute modern classic

A game like they don't make them anymore

It feels like a classic adventure game right out the era of Broken Sword 1 or Monkey Island 2 (not surprisingly these were insirations for the game amongst many other), but with modern features, cleverly integrated so they are there when you need them (like a hint system) but don't spoil the fun of figuring out things for yourself. There is so much to love here. The graphics are top notch, with special case animations in abundance. Some of the animations are a bit stiff, but with so many of them who can blame the animators for cutting corners. The soundtrack is awesome, especially the interactive song! The voiceacting is next to perfect and some of the lines made me laugh out loud. The story is isn't super-deep, but keeps you engaged and Murphy is a truely likable hero. The puzzles weren't too hard, but challenging enough to give you a good feeling after solving them. That sweet spot is hard to hit, but they did it. What a year for adventure games this is!
