Must play.

A spectacular game. Usually mentioned now in the same breath as Assassins' Creed, as an example of 'flawed genius'. This is too reductive: yes, Far Cry has some weaker levels but the overall game is stunning. Remember the Xen levels of Half-Life? The game is an exemplary shooter - the guns are satisfying, if a little cliché; the enemies are the same. The freeform structure is much more than hype and really delivers some excellent unscripted moments. The replayability and room for experimentation is pretty much unmatched: the single demo level delivered hundreds of hours of fun alone. The graphics and setting are more than the icing on the cake: they're the icing on the second cake, even bigger than the first, well-iced cake. Or something. The art and graphics are beautiful, and make exploration brilliant fun - so much effort has gone in to making the islands a cool place to visit, right down to rusting WW2 relics to stumble across in the jungle. Never fear, though, the game runs great even on slower machines. Far Cry is sometimes referred to nowadays as a past-it milestone; a game that was groundbreaking once. However, it's worth considering that the only games to have really challenged Far Cry in the 'big freeform shooting, lovely setting' arena are its spiritual sequels, Crysis and Far Cry 2. The original still has so much to give, especially at this price. Take a holiday!

get this game

Ok I got this game the first time round an all I can say is wow ok the graphics may look a little dated but thats because it is an old game (well obviously)an is it good ? well in a word yes the first lets say half of the game at least is very good you start off in a bunker unarmed with no armor and no guide of where to go (don't worry it quite obvious) you pretty soon get a gun some armor and a guy who kind of guides you through the game. the enemy AI at the time was unparalled the mercs will flank you and adjust their tactics to the way you play (and there are many ways to play). Once you get half way through you will get to something called a trigen they are a kind of monster not too hard to kill but they are quite fun my overiding memory was in a kind of lab I releaced some from their cage an letting them kill the mercs in that room and then killing the trigens my self (ah good times) in short it was is and always will be a good game a word of warning though far cry 2 is very diffrent and notb of good although far cry 3v ( out soon looks good

Great fun. Challenging.

I haven't finished the game yet but have had a lot of fun, rage quit and uninstalled once because I missed a door. I'm playing on the lowest difficulty and it's still very challenging. One con is although it is open world, you can't really just wander around and explore from what I've played because of the enemies and all. If you like fps games I highly recommend this. I have a different version of the game but I think I'll also buy the GOG version at some point.
