Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition

Despite what some people say in these reviews, GOG is definitely the best place to buy Fallout 3. That being said, as far as I know, they only fixed two major issues for PC, which means GOG fixed the GFWL issue, and (I think?) the multicore crash issue. No one is perfect, but GOG managed to legitimately make this title available for many more people on PC than it was before 2017. Even after getting this version here I had issues on my Win 7 PC with integrated Intel graphics, and had to search for help. So... Thank (and curse) Microsoft for the modern PC as we know it today. Thank (and curse) Bethesda for Fallout 3. Shame on Microsoft for Games For Windows Live, ever. Period. (I'm so glad I had my head in the console gaming clouds back then. Never even heard of GFWL until 2017.) For people who purchased Fallout 3 on GOG and can't get it running smoothly... you still have some work to do. 1. I recommend if you don't already have one: a nexusmods account. There you will find the Intel HD graphics trick. 2. Gopher over at gophersvids has an excellent, although dated now, video series on successfully modding Fallout 3, starting specifically with tackling several issues that may be keeping your game from running in the first place. Even if you don't want to mod your game, I'm pretty certain you will appreciate the information from Gopher. And NO, I am not getting paid for this plug, I just think his information is fairly clear and easy to follow. 3. Another guy named Apoqsi has good information as well. 4. Do your own research, and you should be able to find the correct information to help you get GOG's Fallout 3 up and running... fairly well on your machine. 5. It will likely take time, effort, determination, and possibly some blood, sweat, and tears... but after all these steps (and probably a few more after that...) you should finally be able to enjoy Fallout 3 as it was (apparently never) intended. Thank GOG for DRM-Free!

And I plan to get this version also, FO3 is really a good game, you play at ya own pace and there are plenty of mods that you can add in, not to mention this version on GoG.com is already 4GB enabled, one less step in the install process, I don't have to edit the ini files. For those that just want to play the base game and not want to mod the game, but have all the DLC's are welcome to do so and have to worry about tinkering with the game files. GoG Really did a great service to the gaming community with the effort and time they put in to FallOut 3, there are so many complaints I have seen over the years, from many sources and many were from those that never modded a game and just expected it work out of the Box, well GoG did just that and for that I thank you GoG. And for those that may think that I'm either paid for this review or work for GoG, that is further from the truth, I'm just another salty ole gamer that gives Kudos were they are Due. The only think I honestly dislike in FO3 is the degrading weapons, it is so annoying, now if GoG can be fix that, I would pay double the Price :)

Another great example of why 2D classics should not senselessly be put in 3D by companies that don't know what they are doing. The enemy has uninterruptible animations while in combat, the game is grindy (just look at the Wasteland Survival Guide quest...), Three Dog is super annoying... there just isn't a good reason to spend 100+ hours in/on this game. Get Fallout 1/2 instead and experience the power of real design.

Still messing with side quests, but fun enough to leave the main quest alone. Though I must say New Vegas is better. This was after all the first time Bethesda got their hands on the franchise. But it was well done anyway.

As my title alludes to, that's my view of FO3. And if you listen to how Todd talked about making FO3, that was his desire. To make "Their" Fallout 1. And to this day, I'd say Fallout 1 and Fallout 3 are by FAR, the darkest, grittiest most bleak and atmospheric entries in the franchise. I have a lot of time invested in FO3 on Steam, but might purchase here on GOG given how I've heard it runs so well "out of the box". Fallout 3 is woefully underrated by certain groups of "fans" of the Fallout franchise. Great game, and yes also a great *Fallout* game despite it being made by a different studio in Bethesda Game Studios vs. Interplay/Black Isle, and in a somewhat different sub-genre of RPGs by being a 3D, first-person/third-person Realtime open-world RPG with a tactical combat mechanic with the VATS system (Another ingenious way of keeping the roots of Fallout in place.) So, to me who is someone that is a longtime Fallout fan, Fallout 3 is great, and is mostly the sole game that put Fallout back on the map as a top of the line RPG franchise in the AAA gaming hemisphere.
