Diablo + Hellfire

Diablo is the type of game series that can always get you to try it but always burns you out, for some people very fast. Let's face it, nostalgia aside, the first game wasn't very good. It's a lot like (better) arcade games and while it's always had the loyalists and hype machine, the series as a whole is one where you will probably find something to enjoy for a while but before the end you'll likely be bored stiff. And it's designed to be played through multiple times! It was an early iteration of grind as content as it's all a repetition of itself over and over. If you find yourself playing just to get to the next part, just quit! It doesn't have a storyline as it's saving grace, in fact it hardly had any story at all. Charm, it does have but it wears off quickly, especially with it's clunky character and inventory systems and made-to-be-forgotten thousand upon thousands of battles. Take if from someone who thought there'd be light at the end of the tunnel, there is no payoff! The 2nd one had a good multiplayer (LAN especially) to rescue it and a story (albeit dark and uninspired) to keep you going but this one fails in that regard. It wasn't horrible, just dull and unimpressive overall. And then of course it's gruesome, if arcade-y; there's no beauty here to enjoy along the way. If you aren't itching to replay your past here, skip this one

I really needed to check this game since it has been praised so much and it was the beginning of the APRG genre. I have quite mixed thoughts about this game regardless of the positive game reviews. Originally Diablo was supposed to be turn-based, so all movement is grid-based. But later on the gameplay was changed to be real-time which has some problems with the grid system. Moving around is clunky and unpredictable, targetting fast-moving and teleporting enemies with the mouse is frustraiting and mouse button mashing to attack is so repetitive. There are also other annoyances like dragging items to slots in the game interface and small gold stacks taking inventory space. Graphically the game has not aged very well. Everything looks grainy which makes hard to search small items on ground like rings and potions. And the game view is quite little which causes problems to detect super annoying ranged enemies who will start rapid-firing far away offscreen before you can even see them. Also, there is no clear feedback like how much damage did you cause to your target and does "MAX" resistances actually protect you from anything at all. But the game has its merits. There is no frustraiting character creation like in Baldur's Gate and no stupid RPG class restrictions, so a warrior can use scrolls and a sorcerer can use swords. You have freedom to develop your character whatever you like. And the game world is not some clichéd and generic high-fantasy with elves, dwarves , orcs and such. So the game has it's own style and it's own grim atmosphere. The game has replay value with different character classes and random-generated dungeons and loot. But since there are Diablo 2 and lots of Diablo clones with more fluency, this game is just dated.

I was looking forward to playing an officially supported High Definition / remastered version of this game on LAN with friends. I assumed to much from the advertising. High resolution does not apparently equate to remastered. I recommend folks find Belzebub instead. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. It doesnt support LAN play, but I think there is a LAN option under a different name by the same modder that I'm looking for. I also recommend GOG actually remaster this gem rather than sell the same old graphics under the guise of "high resolution".
